The Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley invites applications for Research Fellowships for academic year 2015-16.
Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowships are an opportunity for outstanding junior scientists (at most 6 years from PhD by Fall 2015) to spend one or both semesters at the Institute in connection with one or more of its programs. The programs for 2015-16 are as follows:
* Fine-Grained Complexity and Algorithm Design (Fall 2015)
* Economics and Computation (Fall 2015)
* Counting Complexity and Phase Transitions (Spring 2016)
* Algorithmic Challenges in Genomics (Spring 2016)
Applicants who already hold junior faculty or postdoctoral positions are welcome to apply. In particular, applicants who hold, or expect to hold, postdoctoral appointments at other institutions are encouraged to apply to spend one semester as a Simons-Berkeley Fellow subject to the approval of the postdoctoral institution.
Further details and application instructions can be found at http://simons.berkeley.edu/fellows2015. Information about the Institute and the above programs can be found at http://simons.berkeley.edu.
Deadline for applications: 15 December, 2014.

In addition to these three talks, there will be a number of shorter
talks by researchers in the early stages of their career.
The workshop is open to all and free of charge, but please register by
sending us an e-mail if you plan to attend.
The website of the workshop can be found at:

In Conjunction with IPDPS 2015
CALL FOR PAPERS
Scaling up machine-learning (ML), data mining (DM) and reasoning
algorithms from Artificial Intelligence (AI) for massive datasets is a
major technical challenge in the times of "Big Data". The past ten
years has seen the rise of multi-core and GPU based computing. In
distributed computing, several frameworks such as Mahout, GraphLab and
Spark continue to appear to facilitate scaling up ML/DM/AI algorithms
using higher levels of abstraction. We invite novel works that advance
the trio-fields of ML/DM/AI through development of scalable algorithms
or computing frameworks. Ideal submissions would be characterized as
scaling up X on Y, where potential choices for X and Y are provided
below.
Scaling up
recommender systems
gradient descent algorithms
deep learning
sampling/sketching techniques
clustering (agglomerative techniques, graph clustering, clustering
heterogeneous data)
classification (SVM and other classifiers)
SVD
probabilistic inference (bayesian networks)
logical reasoning
graph algorithms and graph mining
On
Parallel architectures/frameworks (OpenMP, OpenCL, Intel TBB)
Distributed systems/frameworks (GraphLab, Hadoop, MPI, Spark etc.)
