Following the tradition of previous CTWs, a special issue of Discrete
Applied Mathematics will be devoted to the 12th Cologne-Twente Workshop
on Graphs and Combinatorial Optimization (CTW 2013,
http://www.math.utwente.nl/~ctw/), held on May 21-23, 2013 at the
University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands.

All interested researchers are invited to contribute to this special
volume. The topics should relate to the themes of the workshop (graph
theory, combinatorial optimization and the design and analysis of
algorithms). Submissions of contributions not presented at the workshop
are also welcome.

All articles will be thoroughly refereed according to the high standards
of Discrete Applied Mathematics.

The full papers must be submitted through the Elsevier Editorial System
(http://ees.elsevier.com/dam). When submitting your paper, make sure
that you specify that the paper is a submission to the special issue of
CTW 2013.

Special issue on POLYNOMIAL OPTIMIZATION
Second Call for Papers

Polynomial Optimization (PO) refers to optimization problems in which all
objective and constraint functions are polynomials. Such problems form an
important and remarkably general class of NP-hard global optimization
problems. A fascinating feature of PO is that it can be approached from
several different directions. Indeed, in addition to traditional techniques
drawn from operational research, computer science and numerical analysis,
new techniques have recently emerged based on concepts taken from
algebraic geometry, commutative algebra and moment theory. For this
reason, PO is a rapidly expanding field.

We are pleased to announce this special issue of Mathematical Programming
Series B on PO, the deadline for which is 30th November 2013. We welcome
papers on all aspects of PO, whether concerned with theory, applications,
algorithms or software. Since we expect a large number of submissions,
all papers that we receive will be refereed to a high standard. Papers that
are deemed to be of high quality, yet are not included in the special issue,
may be forwarded to either Mathematical Programming Series A or
Mathematical Programming Computation for consideration (with the agreement
of both the authors and the respective editor-in-chief).

The IPCO conference is a forum for researchers and practitioners working on various aspects of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. The aim is to present recent developments in theory, computation, and applications. The scope of IPCO is viewed in a broad sense, to include algorithmic and structural results in integer programming and combinatorial optimization as well as revealing computational studies and novel applications of discrete optimization to practical problems.

Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts of their recent work by November 15, 2013; see the submission guidelines for more information. The program committee will select the papers to be presented on the basis of the submitted extended abstracts. Contributions are expected to be original, unpublished and not submitted to journals or conferences with proceedings before the notification date (January 31, 2014). Papers violating these requirements will not be considered by the Program Committee.

During the conference, approximately 33 papers will be presented in single-track sessions. Each lecture will be 30 minutes long. The proceedings will be published as Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science. They will contain extended abstracts of all accepted submissions. It is expected that revised and extended versions will subsequently be submitted for publication in appropriate journals. Each participant will receive a copy of the proceedings at the conference.

INTRODUCTION

Along with the worldwide incentive to reduce fossil and nuclear based power
generation, the number of distributed generators and other forms of
distributed energy resources which are installed in power networks has been
steadily increasing over the last years. This increased integration has
triggered a transformation of the energy system and challenges the
conventional operation of these networks.

On a network level, this transformation requires new control and communication
approaches, to guarantee the security of energy supplies as well as an optimal
exploitation of available resources. On a generator level, advanced control
strategies as well as morphological optimization (e.g., tuning of wind-blade
design) can help to assure an optimal performance of the generator.

EvoEnergy is intended as a platform for new, innovative computational
intelligence and nature-inspired techniques in the domain of energy-related
optimization research. We seek contributions ranging from new control concepts
for decentralized generation, strategies for their coordination in the network
to the morphological optimization of distributed generators.


TOPICS

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, any of
the following:
- management of distributed generation and storage
- evolutionary design and morphological optimization in energy systems
- advanced distribution management system functionalities
- Smart Grid monitoring and control

PUBLICATION DETAILS

Accepted papers will appear in the proceedings of EvoStar, published in a
volume of the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science, which will be
available at the Conference.

Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere. The submissions will
be peer reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. The
authors of accepted papers will have to improve their paper on the basis of
the reviewers comments and will be asked to send a camera ready version of
their manuscripts. At least one author of each accepted work has to register
for the conference and attend the conference and present the work. The
reviewing process will be double-blind, please omit information about the
authors in the submitted paper.

We are pleased to announce a workshop in graph theory to be held on
Thursday, 31 October and Friday, 1 November 2013. It will take place
in Utrecht, an ancient and beautiful city in the heart of the
Netherlands.

We have an exciting programme planned. The speakers include Maria

The postdoc will be working in the research project "Completely
Positive and Copositive Matrices" which is funded by the
German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development
(GIF). The investigators in this project are Mirjam Duer (University
of Trier, Germany), Abraham Berman (Technion - Israel Institute of
Technology, Haifa) and Naomi Shaked-Monderer (The Max Stern Yezreel
Valley College). The research area will be in the intersection of
matrix theory and nonlinear optimization. More specifically, we are
interested in optimization problems over the copositive and completely
positive matrix cones, as well as the geometry of these cones.

The position will be starting 1 January 2014 or later, and is granted
for one year. Monthly salary will be according to TVL-E13. The
position may be extended for a second year which will be spent in
Israel at the Technion.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in mathematics or a related field,
and should have an expertise in either matrix theory or conic

NSF Workshop on Self-Organizing Particle Systems
January 8, 2014, co-located with SODA

The goal of this NSF-sponsored workshop is to bring together people from
thetheory and practice of self-organizing physical and biological systems
in order to report on recent advances in this area and to identify
directions for interdisciplinary research that will help shape the future
of the field. The one-day meeting will consist of several invited talks
around four major research areas, namely

- amorphous computing,
- modular robotics,
- self-organizing biological systems, and
- self-assembling DNA

Confirmed speakers are currently Bernard Chazelle (Princeton U.), John Reif
(Duke U.), Mark Yim (U. Pennsylvania), Nikolaus Correll (U. Colorado), and

Two three-year postdoctoral positions available in Algorithms and
Lower bounds at
the University of Bristol, UK.

This is a ?rolling advert? with a nominal advert close date of 31
December 2013. Applications are welcome at any time and the timing of
the selection process will be dependent on the applications received.
Start date is dependent on the circumstances of the successful
candidates.

Based in the Department of Computer Science at the University of
Bristol you will carry out research within a project concerned with
the development of new algorithms as well as provable time and space
lower bounds. This is part of an EPSRC funded research project on
pattern matching in dynamically changing as well as streaming data.

The role will require a high level of expertise in areas which may include
but not be limited to data structures, algorithms, probability,
discrete mathematics and combinatorics. Candidates with a strong
mathematical background are particularly encouraged to apply.

Post 1
The emphasis will be new pattern matching algorithms with provable
performance bounds such as appear in the conferences
ICALP/SODA/STOC/FOCS. You will also at times implement and test
algorithms related to the proposal.

Post 2
This role will have as its main focus the development of time and
space lower bounds for pattern matching problems. You will ideally
already be familiar with lower bound techniques such as the chronogram
method and Mihai Patrascu?s information transfer method.

For both posts you will have Ph.D. in theoretical computer science or
closely related area together with a strong track record of
international publications in algorithms/theoretical computer science
venues.

In addition you will have excellent written and spoken communication
skills including the ability to explain and share deep concepts. You
should have a strong mathematical background and ideally excellent
programming skills.

Appointments will be made at Research Assistant or Research Associate
depending on skills and experience.

This PhD project will address problems of deployment and real-time
scheduling of patrol vehicles that have to service breakdowns. The main
goal of the project will be to use operational research techniques to
design algorithms that are effective in dealing with problems with about
2500 patrol vehicles across the UK. Specific objectives are:
(a) finding the optimal number and locations of new patrol stations (if
any) to be established under the uncertainty of the breakdown locations;
(b) determining the number of patrol vehicles to be deployed at each
(existing or new) station; and
? online scheduling of the patrol vehicles to service the incoming
requests for assistance within a target response time (where possible),
and with an overall objective of minimizing the total operation costs.
A simulation model will also be developed to evaluate the performance of
the algorithms that are developed.

The student will be based in the Operational Research Group in
Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton. The project will
run in collaboration with the AA (Automobile Association), which is based
in Basingstoke. Consequently, the student will spend some time in the AA
offices observing the processes, collecting data, liaising with staff, and
eventually communicating the results. The project will be jointly
supervised by Prof. Chris Potts and Prof. Tolga Bektas.

Applicants should have completed, or expect to complete before November
2013, a Bachelor?s degree in Operational Research, Mathematics,
Statistics, or a related area with at least an upper second class
classification (or the equivalent), and preferably a Master?s degree. The
deadline for applications is 14 October 2013, and the latest start date
for the PhD project is 1 December 2013.

The studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU level and a stipend
of approximately ?13,500. Both UK/EU students and international students
are encouraged to apply.

SCOPE : Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that present
original unpublished research in all areas of parallel and distributed
processing, including the development of experimental or commercial
systems. Work focusing on emerging technologies is especially welcome.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Parallel and distributed algorithms, focusing on topics such as:
numerical, combinatorial, and data-intensive parallel algorithms,
scalability of algorithms and data structures for parallel and
distributed systems, communication and synchronization protocols,
network algorithms, scheduling, and load balancing.

- Applications of parallel and distributed computing, including
computational and data-enabled science and engineering, big data
applications, parallel crowd sourcing, large-scale social network
analysis, management of big data, cloud and grid computing, scientific
and biomedical applications, and mobile computing. Papers focusing on
applications using novel commercial or research architectures, big
data approaches, or discussing scalability toward the exascale level
are encouraged.

- Parallel and distributed architectures, including architectures for
instruction-level and thread-level parallelism; petascale and exascale
systems designs; novel big data architectures; special-purpose
architectures, including graphics processors, signal processors,
network processors, media accelerators, and other special purpose
processors and accelerators; impact of technology on architecture;
network and interconnect architectures; parallel I/O and storage
systems; architecture of the memory hierarchy; power-efficient and
green computing architectures; dependable architectures; and
performance modeling and evaluation.

- Parallel and distributed software, including parallel and multicore
programming languages and compilers, runtime systems, operating
systems, resource management including green computing, middleware for
grids, clouds, and data centers, libraries, performance modeling and
evaluation, parallel programming paradigms, and programming
environments and tools. Papers focusing on novel software systems for
big data and exascale systems are encouraged.

The 28th IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing
Symposium will be held 19-23 May 2014 in Phoenix at the Arizona Grand
Resort, an all-suites family-friendly resort and meeting place.
Phoenix has an international airport and is the hub for several US
airlines. It is only a six hour drive from Los Angeles and Las Vegas
and the starting point for one day tours of the Grand Canyon as well
as other historic communities in the area. For those who come early or
stay late, there are boundless Southwest tourist attractions and
activities. For shorter trip times, AGR has a water-world, golf
course, and hiking and riding trails on the premises and an indoor

A PhD position is available in the DFG-funded Emmy Noether Junior Research
Group

"Efficient preprocessing for hard problems"

led by Stefan Kratsch at TU Berlin. The successful candidate will perform
research on parameterized complexity, kernelization, and related topics.
The main focus of research is on the rigorous study of polynomial-time
preprocessing for NP-hard combinatorial problems. Apart from scientific
contributions, the successful candidate will pursue a PhD in theoretical
computer science, with the goal of defending a doctoral thesis within
3-4 years.

The position is fulltime with an initial contract for 2 years and the
possibility to extend by up to 2 further years. There are no teaching
obligations,
but interest in teaching (exercises or lectures) is encouraged. The
position is available from November 1, 2013. Starting salary is roughly
1900
Euros net (includes mandatory health insurance; 3200 Euros before tax).

The junior research group is associated with the "Algorithms and
complexity"
group chaired by Prof. Rolf Niedermeier (http://www.akt.tu-berlin.de/),

Aim and Scope

Evolutionary computation methods such as evolutionary algorithms or
ant colony optimization have been successfully applied to a wide range
of problems. This includes classical combinatorial optimization
problems and many hard real-world optimization problems. Real-world
problems are often hard to optimize by traditional methods as they are
non-linear, highly constrained, multi-objective, and come with a wide
range of uncertainties. Many different evolutionary computation
methods for dealing with complex problems have been proposed over the
years

In contrast to the successful applications to extremely difficult
problems, the theoretical understanding of these algorithms lags far
behind the practical success. This is unfortunate, since a rigorous
understanding of the working principles of evolutionary methods can
lead to a better understanding under which situations a given type of
algorithm works, and provide design guidelines for new powerful
methods in practice.

For these reasons the last 20 years saw increasing efforts to lay the
theoretical foundations of evolutionary methods. The aim of this
special issue is to advance the theoretical understanding of
evolutionary computation methods and bridge theory and practice. We
solicit novel, high-quality scientific contributions on theoretical or
foundational aspects of evolutionary computation. A successful
exchange between theory and practice in evolutionary computation is
very desirable and papers bridging theory and practice are of
particular interest. In addition to strict mathematical
investigations, experimental studies strengthening the theoretical
foundations of evolutionary computation methods are very welcome.

Topics

The special issue will present in a coherent form novel results from
different sub-areas of evolutionary computation theory. Authors are
encouraged to submit novel, high-quality research from any sub-area,
including (but not limited to):

- Representations
- Scaling issues
- Methods for handling constraints
- Dynamic and stochastic environments
- Feature-based analysis, fitness landscapes and problem difficulty
- Co-evolution
- Evolutionary multi-objective optimization
- Meta-optimization
- Human/evolutionary algorithm interactions (human in the loop)
- Runtime analysis of all types of evolutionary computing techniques
including evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, memetic
algorithms and artificial immune systems.

Submission

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the instructions of the
"Information for Authors" section of the journal, available at
http://ieee-cis.org/pubs/tec/authors/. Papers incorrectly formatted
will be returned without review.

Papers must be submitted through the IEEE TEVC journal website:
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tevc-ieee. Authors must clearly
indicate "Special issue on Theoretical Foundations of Evolutionary
Computation" in the comments to the Editor-in-Chief. Submitted papers
will be reviewed by at least three reviewers. The submission of a
manuscript implies that it is the authors' original unpublished work

Geometry is one of most studied areas of mathematics and, though its
role as a
foundational system has evolved over time, it remains key to our
understanding
of many aspects of the world. It is one of the first areas to which
Artificial
Intelligence (AI) was applied and has remained the focus of much work in
the
field, giving rise to new mathematical concepts and techniques, heuristics,
algorithms, and applications over the past fifty years. In view of the
importance
of geometry and the sustained advances in the field of computer-based
geometric
reasoning and its applications, the time seems ripe to take stock of the
progress
so far and look at some of the latest mathematical and AI-related
advances in
the field. Thus, we invite original contributions -- ranging from theory to
implementations and applications -- and insightful surveys to a special
issue of
the Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence on Geometric
Reasoning.

Relevant topics include (but are not limited to):

* Automated and interactive theorem proving in geometry involving
algebraic,
logical, and/or probabilistic approaches.
* Symbolic and numerical methods for geometric computation and constraint
solving.
* The formal verification of geometric algorithms, for instance in
relation to
computational geometry.

The International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics (ISAIM) is a biennial meeting that fosters interactions between mathematics, theoretical computer science, and artificial intelligence. We seek submissions of recent results, with a particular emphasis on the foundations of AI and mathematical methods used in AI. Papers describing applications are also encouraged, but the focus should be on principled lessons learned from the development of the application. Traditionally, the Symposium attracts participants from a variety of disciplines, thereby providing a unique forum for scientific exchange. The submission deadline is October 15, 2013 (11:59 PM PDT). Papers will be reviewed by members of the Program Committee. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by November 15, 2013. Final versions of accepted papers, for inclusion in the conference electronic proceedings, are due by December 15, 2013.

Work that has already been published as of the ISAIM submission deadline should not be submitted to ISAIM unless it introduces a significant addition to the previously published work. However, the ISAIM web site proceedings are not archival, so papers submitted to ISAIM can be under review at the time of submission and can be submitted elsewhere after ISAIM.

Authors of a selected set of papers from the Symposium will be invited to submit full versions of their papers for inclusion in a special volume of the Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, published by Springer. Those invited submissions will be subject to refereeing at the usual standards of the journal, and authors will receive more details with the acceptance notice. Papers must of course be new and unpublished to be considered for the special volume.

timetabling, network design, transportation and distribution problems,
vehicle routing, travelling salesman, graph problems, satisfiability,
energy optimization problems, packing problems, planning problems, and
general mixed integer programming.

The EvoCOP 2014 conference will be held in the little town of Baeza
located in the south of Spain. It will be held in conjunction with
EuroGP (the 17th European Conference on Genetic Programming), EvoBio
(the 12th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation, Machine
Learning and Data Mining in Computational Biology), EvoMUSART (12th
European conference on evolutionary and biologically inspired music,
sound, art and design) and EvoApplications (specialist events on a range
of evolutionary computation topics and applications), in a joint event
collectively known as EVO*.

Publication Details

All accepted papers will be presented orally at the conference and
printed in the proceedings published by Springer in the LNCS series (see
LNCS volumes 2037, 2279, 2611, 3004, 3448, 3906, 4446, 4972, 5482, 6022,
6622, 7245 and 7832 for the previous proceedings).

Submission Details

Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere. The
submissions will be peer reviewed by members of the program committee.
The authors of accepted papers will have to improve their paper on the
basis of the reviewers comments and will be asked to send a camera ready
version of their manuscripts. At least one author of each accepted work
has to register for the conference, attend the conference and present
the work.

The reviewing process will be double-blind, please omit information
about the authors in the submitted paper. Submit your manuscript in
Springer LNCS format.
