A PhD position in Mathematical Optimization is available at the
University of Vienna, Institute of Statistics and Operations Research
(http://isor.univie.ac.at/).

The position is within the research project "Optimization and Analysis
of Large Scale Networks" funded by the Vienna Science and Technology
Fund (WWTF) and is available for up to three years. Further extension
might be possible. The gross salary per year is approximately EUR
28.000. The position does not include any teaching obligations (optional
teaching would be paid separately).

The candidate should have (or expect to have shortly) an excellent
master degree in operations research, mathematics, computer science or a
closely related area. A successful candidate has profound knowledge in
(computational) mathematical optimization (in particular mixed integer
programming) in theory and practice. Solid implementation skills are a
must. The candidate will work on large-scale mathematical optimization
problems arising in logistic, social and / or telecommunication
networks. Collaboration with project partners from Italy (University of
Padua) and France (ESSEC Business School, Paris) is expected.

The application should include the candidate's CV, an abstract of the
master's thesis, a motivation letter, and contact details of references
(or reference letters). The application should also mention possible
starting dates and should be sent (as a single PDF file) via email to

markus.leitner@univie.ac.at

The review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the
position is filled. Applications received by January 18, 2016 will
receive full consideration. Informal inquiries by email (Markus Leitner,

The Department of Management Science in Lancaster University currently has four EPSRC-funded PhD studentships in Operational Research (OR). These cover full fees plus a generous stipend of between £17k to £19k.

The department houses one of the largest and most influential OR groups in Europe. We are looking to recruit up to four students who:

· have a strong quantitative background (including mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering),
· satisfy the UK residency requirement for full EPSRC support (usually met by EU students whose undergraduate studies were in the UK), and
. wish to conduct research on an OR-related topic, such as Optimisation, Forecasting, Simulation or Stochastic Modelling.

Successful candidates with a suitable master's degree will be awarded a 3.5 year research studentship, while those with only a bachelor's degree will be admitted to a 1+3 year programme which incorporates an initial year of research training (MRes). As part of your doctoral training, you will be able to access a wide range of opportunities for personal and skills development, including association with Lancaster's centre for doctoral training in statistics and OR for industry (STOR-i).

Your application should be by covering letter, in which you should indicate which area is of interest to you (and why) and some possible topics for research, along with a full CV. We shall then contact short-listed candidates to put them in touch with potential supervisors for the development of a fuller research proposal. For more information, go to our webpage and/or contact Gay Bentinck: e-mail g.bentinck@lancaster.ac.uk or phone 01524 592408. Applications will be processed as soon as they are received. The appointment process will include an interview.

First round deadline: 15 February 2016

*** Invitation 114th European Study Group Mathematics with Industry
2016, Nijmegen ***

Date/location: January 25-29, 2016, Radboud University, Nijmegen, The
Netherlands

Since 1968, the Study Group Mathematics with Industry has brought
together mathematicians and companies. Following the original Oxford
model, about 60 mathematicians, ranging from PhD students to full
professors, spend a week working on real life problems, presented to
them by companies on Monday morning. During four busy days these
problems are discussed, dissected, modelled, analysed, and computed,
and results are presented on Friday.

Check on our website for more information, and also for registration:
http://www.ru.nl/swi2016/

Participation is free of charge. We can reimburse hotel costs for a
limited number of participants.

Best regards,

The organisers of SWI 2016,
