Call for Papers
DISCML -- 6th Workshop on Discrete Optimization in Machine Learning
at NIPS 2014 (Montreal)
Dec 13, 2014
www.discml.cc
===================================================================
Discrete optimization problems and combinatorial structures are becoming
increasingly important in machine learning. They arise for discrete
labels with complex dependencies, structured estimators, learning with
graphs, partitions, permutations, or when selecting informative subsets
of data or features.
What are efficient algorithms for handling such problems? Can we robustly
solve them in the presence of noise? What about streaming or distributed
settings? Which models are computationally tractable and rich enough for
applications? What theoretical worst-case bounds can we show?
What explains good performance in practice?
Such questions are the theme of the DISCML workshop. It aims to bring
together theorists and practitioners to explore new applications, models
and algorithms, and mathematical properties and concepts that can help
learning with complex interactions and discrete structures.
We invite high-quality submissions that present recent results related
to discrete and combinatorial problems in machine learning, and submissions
that discuss open problems or controversial questions and observations,
e.g., missing theory to explain why algorithms work well in certain
instances but not in general, or illuminating worst case examples.
We also welcome the description of well-tested software and benchmarks.
Areas of interest include, but are not restricted to:
* discrete optimization for machine learning
* graph algorithms
* relaxations
* learning of discrete structures
* new models (e.g. diversity priors, regularization, discrete
probabilistic models)
* algorithms for large data (streaming, sketching, distributed)
* online learning
* new applications
Submissions:
Please send submissions in NIPS 2014 format (length max. 6 pages,
non-anonymous) to

CALL FOR PAPERS
ACM e-Energy 2015
The Sixth International Conference on Future Energy Systems
July 14-17, 2015, Bangalore, India
http://conferences.sigcomm.org/eenergy/2015/
Computing and communication technologies impact energy systems in two
distinct ways. The exponential growth in deployment of these
technologies has made them large-scale energy consumers. Therefore,
new architectures, technologies and systems are being developed and
deployed to make computing and networked system more energy efficient.
Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, these technologies are at
the center of the on-going revolution in next generation ?smart? and
sustainable energy systems. They measure, monitor and control energy
systems such as the smart grid; inform and shape human demand; aid in
the prediction, deployment, storage and control of energy resources;
and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers
measure, analyze, and collectively control system elements.
The sixth International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM
e-Energy), to be held in Bangalore, India in July 2015 aims to be the
premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of computing
and communication for smart energy systems (including the smart grid),
and in energy-efficient computing and communication systems. By
bringing together researchers in a high-quality single-track
conference with significant opportunities for individual and small
group interactions, it will serve as a major forum for presentations
and discussions that will shape the future of this area.
We solicit high-quality papers in the area of computing and
communication for the Smart Grid and energy-efficient computing and
communications. We welcome submissions describing theoretical advances
as well as system design, implementation and experimentation. ACM
eEnergy is committed to a fair, timely, and thorough review process
providing authors of submitted papers with sound and detailed
feedback.
Relevant topics for the conference include, but are not limited to the
following:
- Advances in monitoring and control of smart homes and buildings
- Sensing, monitoring, control, and management of energy systems
- Energy-efficient computing and communication, including
energy-efficient data centers
- The impact of storage integration on the smart grid
- Electric Vehicle monitoring and control
- Distribution and transmission network control techniques
- Microgrid and distributed generation management and control
- Modeling, control, and architectures for renewable energy generation resources
- Smart grid communication architectures and protocols
- Privacy and security of smart grid infrastructure
- Innovative pricing and incentives for demand-side management
- Novel technologies to enhance reliability and robustness of energy systems
- HCI for energy monitoring, management, and awareness
- User studies and behavioral change enabled by computing and
communication technologies
- Data analytics for the smart grid and energy-efficient systems
- Modeling, management and control of variability and uncertainty in
energy supply and demand
Submissions
Three types of contributions are solicited:
- Regular papers, up to 10 pages in ACM double-column format, should
present original theoretical and/or experimental research in any of
the areas listed above that has not been previously published,
accepted for publication, or is not currently under review by another
conference or journal. Regular papers are intended to describe high
quality research work based on novel ideas that have been thoroughly
evaluated. The 10 pages limit is intended to be an upper bound and we
encourage the authors to take fewer pages if appropriate. The review
process for regular papers will include a thorough evaluation by the
program committee, opportunity for authors to respond to reviews, and
a shepherding process to ensure compliance with review comments before
the paper acceptance is finalized.
- Challenge Papers, up to 6 pages in ACM double-column format, should
present revolutionary new ideas that challenge existing assumptions
prevalent among the e-Energy research community. Challenge papers
should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting
avenues and/or influence the direction of future research.
Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not
appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive
evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight into and
in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers
will be reviewed by the program committee and will be part of the
technical program and published in the proceedings. The title of these
papers must start with the prefix "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest
of the Title."
- Poster and Demo Abstracts, up to 2 pages in ACM double-column format
showcasing works-in-progress; accepted posters/demos will be presented
at the conference. Topics of interest are the same as research topics
listed above. Preference will be given to posters/demos where the
primary contribution is from one or more students. Additionally, the
demo abstracts should be accompanied by a third page (which will not
be published) describing the script of the demo to be presented as
well as any special resource requirements (space, networking,
electricity etc.). The title for the abstracts must have the prefix
?Poster Abstract:? or ?Demo Abstract:? as appropriate.
The submission must be in PDF format with all fonts embedded, and be
formatted according to the official ACM Proceedings format. Papers
that do not meet the size and formatting requirements will not be
reviewed. Word and LaTeX templates are available at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Please
note that you must use the ?Strict Adherence to SIGS style? template
option.

Open PostDoc position at the research group Theoretical Computer Science at University of Siegen, Germany (Payment German TV-L 13)
The research group for Theoretical Computer Science is offering a position as a postdoctoral researcher, starting at January 1, 2015 or earlier.
The job is part of the research project QUANT-KOMP (quantitative aspects of grammar-based compression) and is funded by the DFG
(German Research Foundation). The salary is based on 13 TV-L (salary class 13 in the German federal state employees salary scheme TV-L),
and the duration is three years.* Short description of the project QUANT-KOMP:
Grammar-based compression is an important subject that has been well-studied from both theoretical and practical point of views.
The main idea is to represent large objects like texts or trees by grammars that generate the input object only. Except for the
compressors from the Lempel-Ziv family only few quantitative aspects about the quality of grammar-based compressors are
known. The main object of the project is to develop new techniques that can provide precise quantitative information about
the compression rate of grammar-based text or tree compression. Both the approximation rate and the classical entropies
(Shannon-entropy, empirical entropy, topological entropy) shall be analyzed for grammar-based compression. For trees the
compression via DAGs (directed acyclic graphs) is of special interest, as it is ubiquitous in Computer Science.
* Your tasks:
- Scientific studies
- Publication of the results in international journals and conference proceedings
- Presentation at conferences
- Supervising students assisting the project
The position does not demand teaching.
* Your profile:
- University degree (diploma, master or bachelor) in Computer Science or Mathematics
- Ph.D. in Theoretical Computer Science or in a similar area
- Knowledge of one or more of the following subjects is favorable: formal languages and automata, algorithms on words and trees,
data compression, information theory, analytic combinatorics.
* University of Siegen:
The University of Siegen has about 18,500 students and 1,700 employees (of which 1,100 are scientific staff). Its scientific focus
is on innovative and interdisciplinary research. It offers a wide spectra of interesting subjects like humanities, economics, engineering
and natural sciences and is a excellent place to teach and do research with many interdisciplinary projects. The University of Siegen
also offers many different ways to combine your career- and family plans; it has been certified as a family-friendly university and offers
a dual career service.
You can find information about the University of Siegen at our Homepage www.uni-siegen.de,

Unified Communications (UC) merge different communication
technologies, types of products, and services, from various
manufacturers, operators, and countries, following diverse policies
and standards. Specifically, in the context of UC, a range of
communication tools are integrated in a way that both corporations and
individuals are able to manage all their communications in one entity
instead of doing it disjointly. It is therefore said that UC bridges
the opening between the various computer related communication
technologies and Voice over IP (VoIP). However, this high level of
heterogeneity expands the risks related to security and privacy that
stakeholders should deal with. To eliminate or even prevent the
increasing threats to end-users and operators, it is important to
explore this growing and timely research topic.
This feature topic will benefit the research community towards
identifying challenges and disseminating the latest methodologies and
solutions to UC security and privacy issues. Its objective is to
publish high-quality articles presenting open issues, algorithms,
protocols, policies, frameworks, standards, and solutions for UC
related to security and privacy. Only technical papers describing
previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research, and not
currently under review by a conference or a journal will be
considered. Reviews and case studies which address state-of-art
research and state-of-practice industry experiences are also welcomed.
We solicit papers in a variety of topics related to unified
communications security and privacy, including, but not limited to:
- Authorization and access control for UC services
- Denial of service prevention schemes for UC
- Reliability and availability issues on UC
- Penetration testing, intrusion detection and prevention
- End-to-end security solutions

- VoIP peering security issues
All received submissions will be sent out for peer review by at least
two experts in the field and evaluated with respect to relevance to
the special issue, level of innovation, depth of contributions, and
quality of presentation. Guest editors will make an initial
determination of the suitability and scope of all submissions. Papers

* Your tasks:
- Scientific studies
- Publication of the results in international journals and conference proceedings
- Presentation at conferences
- Supervising students assisting the project
The position does not demand teaching.
* Your profile:
* University of Siegen:

CALL FOR PAPERS
Learning and Intelligent OptimizatioN Conference
LION 9 , Lille, FRANCE, Jan. 12-16, 2015.

***EXTENDED DEADLINE: October 23th, 2014***
================================================
Learning and Intelligent OptimizatioN Conference LION 9
CALL FOR SESSIONS AND PAPERS
The large variety of heuristic algorithms for hard optimization problems
raises numerous interesting and challenging issues. Practitioners are
confronted with the burden of selecting the most appropriate method, in
many cases through an expensive algorithm configuration and parameter
tuning process, and subject to a steep learning curve. Scientists seek
theoretical insights and demand a sound experimental methodology for
evaluating algorithms and assessing strengths and weaknesses. A
necessary prerequisite for this effort is a clear separation between the
algorithm and the experimenter, who, in too many cases, is "in the loop"
as a crucial intelligent learning component. Both issues are related to
designing and engineering ways of "learning" about the performance of
different techniques, and ways of using past experience about the
algorithm behavior to improve performance in the future. Intelligent
learning schemes for mining the knowledge obtained from different runs
or during a single run can improve the algorithm development and design
process and simplify the applications of high-performance optimization
methods. Combinations of algorithms can further improve the robustness
and performance of the individual components provided that sufficient
knowledge of the relationship between problem instance characteristics
and algorithm performance is obtained.
This meeting, which continues the successful series of LION events (see
LION 5 in Rome, LION 6 in Paris, LION 7 in Catania, and LION 8 in
Gainesville), is exploring the intersections and uncharted territories
between machine learning, artificial intelligence, mathematical
programming and algorithms for hard optimization problems. The main
purpose of the event is to bring together experts from these areas to
discuss new ideas and methods, challenges and opportunities in various
application areas, general trends and specific developments.
Already confirmed invited speakers are: David Corne (Heriot-Watt
University, UK), Alex Freitas (University of Kent, UK), Daniel Le Berre
(Universit? de Lens, France) and R?mi Munos (INRIA, France). Tutorials
will be given by : Manuel L?pez-Ib??ez and Thomas St?tzle (Universit?
Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium) and S?bastien Verel (Universit? du Littoral
C?te d'Opale, France).
LION will continue to be one of the most respected conferences for
researchers working on Learning and Optimization by ensuring a strict
selection of paper with an average selection rate lower than 40%.
Following the tradition of LION, the proceedings will be published after
the conference in the Series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) by
Springer.

Special Issue on:
Security and Privacy in Unified Communications: Challenges and Solutions
Direct Link:
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computer-communications/call-for-papers/special-issue-on-security-and-privacy-in-unified-communicati/
========================================================================
Unified Communications (UC) merge different communication
technologies, types of products, and services, from various
manufacturers, operators, and countries, following diverse policies
and standards. Specifically, in the context of UC, a range of
communication tools are integrated in a way that both corporations and
individuals are able to manage all their communications in one entity
instead of doing it disjointly. It is therefore said that UC bridges
the opening between the various computer related communication
technologies and Voice over IP (VoIP). However, this high level of
heterogeneity expands the risks related to security and privacy that
stakeholders should deal with. To eliminate or even prevent the
increasing threats to end-users and operators, it is important to
explore this growing and timely research topic.
This feature topic will benefit the research community towards
identifying challenges and disseminating the latest methodologies and
solutions to UC security and privacy issues. Its objective is to
publish high-quality articles presenting open issues, algorithms,
protocols, policies, frameworks, standards, and solutions for UC
related to security and privacy. Only technical papers describing
previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research, and not
currently under review by a conference or a journal will be
considered. Reviews and case studies which address state-of-art
research and state-of-practice industry experiences are also welcomed.
We solicit papers in a variety of topics related to unified
communications security and privacy, including, but not limited to:
- Authorization and access control for UC services
- Denial of service prevention schemes for UC
- Reliability and availability issues on UC
- Penetration testing, intrusion detection and prevention
- End-to-end security solutions
- Cryptographic protocols for UC
- Voice security
- Signaling security and privacy
- Multimedia application security and privacy analysis
- Multimedia communication platforms vulnerabilities and attacks
- Security and privacy in mobile communication services
- Smartphone multimedia apps security and privacy
- Social networking security and privacy
- Testbed and case studies for secure and private UC services
- Trust establishment in UC
- IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) security
- Privacy and identity management
- Privacy enhancing technologies for UC
- Privacy models for UC
- Security and privacy assessment for UC
- Security policies
- Auditing, verification, and validation of UC services
- Risk analysis and management
- Cyber-security issues affecting UC
- Protection of UC as a Critical Information Infrastructure
- VoIP peering security issues
All received submissions will be sent out for peer review by at least
two experts in the field and evaluated with respect to relevance to
the special issue, level of innovation, depth of contributions, and
quality of presentation. Guest editors will make an initial
determination of the suitability and scope of all submissions. Papers
that either lack originality, clarity in presentation or fall outside
the scope of the special issue will not be sent for review and the
authors will be promptly informed in such cases. Submitted papers must
not be under consideration by any other journal or publication.
Schedule
Manuscript submission deadline: October 31, 2014
Pre-notification (first round): January 30, 2015
Final-notification (second round): April 3, 2015
Publication of special issue: 2015 (Tentative)

CALL FOR PAPERS
Learning and Intelligent OptimizatioN Conference
LION 9 , Lille, FRANCE, Jan. 12-16, 2015.
http://www.lifl.fr/LION9/
***EXTENDED DEADLINE: October 23th, 2014***
================================================

========================================================================
Unified Communications (UC) merge different communication
technologies, types of products, and services, from various
manufacturers, operators, and countries, following diverse policies
and standards. Specifically, in the context of UC, a range of
communication tools are integrated in a way that both corporations and
individuals are able to manage all their communications in one entity
instead of doing it disjointly. It is therefore said that UC bridges
the opening between the various computer related communication
technologies and Voice over IP (VoIP). However, this high level of
heterogeneity expands the risks related to security and privacy that
stakeholders should deal with. To eliminate or even prevent the
increasing threats to end-users and operators, it is important to
explore this growing and timely research topic.
This feature topic will benefit the research community towards
identifying challenges and disseminating the latest methodologies and
solutions to UC security and privacy issues. Its objective is to
publish high-quality articles presenting open issues, algorithms,
protocols, policies, frameworks, standards, and solutions for UC
related to security and privacy. Only technical papers describing
previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research, and not
currently under review by a conference or a journal will be
considered. Reviews and case studies which address state-of-art
research and state-of-practice industry experiences are also welcomed.
We solicit papers in a variety of topics related to unified
communications security and privacy, including, but not limited to:
- Authorization and access control for UC services
- Denial of service prevention schemes for UC
- Reliability and availability issues on UC
- Penetration testing, intrusion detection and prevention
- End-to-end security solutions
- Cryptographic protocols for UC
- Voice security
- Signaling security and privacy
- Multimedia application security and privacy analysis
- Multimedia communication platforms vulnerabilities and attacks
- Security and privacy in mobile communication services
- Smartphone multimedia apps security and privacy
- Social networking security and privacy
- Testbed and case studies for secure and private UC services
- Trust establishment in UC
- IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) security
- Privacy and identity management
- Privacy enhancing technologies for UC
- Privacy models for UC
- Security and privacy assessment for UC
- Security policies
- Auditing, verification, and validation of UC services
- Risk analysis and management
- Cyber-security issues affecting UC
- Protection of UC as a Critical Information Infrastructure
- VoIP peering security issues
All received submissions will be sent out for peer review by at least
two experts in the field and evaluated with respect to relevance to
the special issue, level of innovation, depth of contributions, and
quality of presentation. Guest editors will make an initial
determination of the suitability and scope of all submissions. Papers
that either lack originality, clarity in presentation or fall outside
the scope of the special issue will not be sent for review and the
authors will be promptly informed in such cases. Submitted papers must
not be under consideration by any other journal or publication.
Schedule
Manuscript submission deadline: October 31, 2014

CALL FOR PAPERS
Elsevier - Computer Communications Journal
Special Issue on
Online Social Networks
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computer-communications/call-for-papers/special-issue-on-online-social-networks1/
Online Social Networks are a massively successful phenomenon, used by
billions of users to interact. Nowadays they are key platforms for,
among others, content dissemination, social and professional networking,
recommendation, scouting, alerting, and political campaigns. The
research interest in OSNs is multi-faceted, and exploits an unmatched
source of large-scale data about the human behavior. It spans a number
of disciplines, across numerous fields in and beyond computer science,
all the way up to the analysis of human social relationships and how
they evolve and mature over time. Moreover, the pervasive presence of
users' mobile devices (e.g., smartphones) has opened new avenues in the
design of mobile social networking services, and in the study of the
interplay between mobility and social interactions. Research in OSN is a
fertile ground also for industry, to develop innovative ideas fostering
the design of the new generation of communication platforms and their
services.
This special issue seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in
all facets of Online Social Networks highlighted above. We also
encourage original work based on an interdisciplinary research (at the
boundary between computer science and humanistic disciplines such as
sociology and anthropology) where quantitative evidence is available
demonstrating the mutual advantage of such an approach. Therefore,
purely methodological papers or papers that do not present quantitative
results with real Online or Mobile Social Networking technologies are
considered out of scope. Moreover, special attention is expected in
interpreting the proposed research results in order to shed light
towards what users may need and wish in terms of novel, practical
services and application.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Design of OSN platforms based on human behavioural models
- Analysis of OSN users' behaviour and its evolution over time
- Comparison of human social behaviour in Online and "offline" Social
Networks, and across OSNs
- Impact of Online Social Networks on human social behaviour
- Analysis of the use of social-networking sites in the urban context
- OSNs for supporting novel, social-oriented applications and services
- Mobile and Location-aware Online Social Networks
- OSN services enabled by the analysis of mobility and social behaviour
- Crowdsourcing for Online and Mobile Social Networks
- Dynamics of trends, information and opinion diffusion in OSN
- Smart recommendations and advertising in Online Social Networks
- Information extraction and search in Online Social Networks
- Privacy in management and analysis of Online and Mobile Social
Networks data
- Privacy, Security, Trust and Reputation in Online Social Networks
- Prevention of misbehaviours (spamming, phishing, ...) in Online Social
Networks
- Modelling of Online Social Networks characteristics and mechanisms
- Graph analysis applied to Online Social Networks
- Complex networks techniques applied to the investigation of OSN
- Data Mining and Machine Learning to gain novel insights on Online
Social Networks
- Novel distributed solutions for designing, supporting and operating
Online Social Networks
- Networking, computation and data infrastructure support for Online
Social Network systems

Social Network systems

a conference, the submitted manuscript should include a substantial
extension of at least 35% novel contributions. In this case, authors are
also required to submit their published conference articles and a
summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal
version.
Papers must be submitted through the Computer Communications website at
http://ees.elsevier.com/comcom, where guidelines for manuscript
