The GD 2015 paper submission deadline is fast approaching!
One week is left for submitting your best papers.

===========================================================================

Call for Papers

GD 2015

23rd International Symposium on
Graph Drawing and Network Visualization

September 24-26, 2015 - Los Angeles, CA, USA
http://www.csun.edu/gd2015/

===========================================================================

Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs and
constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph Drawing and
Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to
visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such
application areas include social sciences, Internet and Web computing,
information systems, computational biology, networking, VLSI circuit
design,
and software engineering.

The International Symposium on Graph Drawing has been the main annual event
in this area for more than twenty years. This year the Steering
Committee of
GD decided to extend the name of the conference from the "International
Symposium on Graph Drawing" to the "International Symposium on Graph
Drawing
and Network Visualization" in order to better emphasize the dual focus of
the conference on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects as well as the
design
of network visualization systems and interfaces.

The conference will be hosted by the California State University at
Northridge,
in Los Angeles, CA, from September 24 to 26, 2015. Researchers and
practitioners
working on any aspect of graph drawing and network visualization are
invited to
contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and
the graph
drawing contest.

PAPERS
------

We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of
theoretical
or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization.
Regular
papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers
submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the
other track.

Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects
----------------------------------------------

This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as
combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for
this track
includes (but is not limited to) the following:

* Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms
* Theory of geometric graphs
* Geometric computing
* Planarity and topological graph theory
* Optimization on graphs

Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects
-----------------------------------------------------------------

This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing,
such as
the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in
different
application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not
limited to) the following:

* Visualization of graphs and networks in application areas (e.g.,
social
sciences, biology, geography, software engineering, circuit design,
business intelligence)
* Software systems for network visualization
* The engineering of visualization systems and algorithms
* Experimental results in graph theory and graph algorithms
* Benchmarks and experimental analysis for network visualization
systems and
user interfaces
* Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction
* Interfaces for interacting with graphs

Notes and Demos
---------------

Besides the two tracks above there will be a separate category called
"Notes
and Demos". In this category it will be possible to submit theoretical
contributions (notes) and applied papers (demos) of shorter length. Papers
in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during
the
conference. In addition, the authors of demo papers will have the
opportunity
to make a demo of their software/system during the poster session.

Submission format
-----------------

All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file for the
conference
series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer.
The margins and font size must not be modified. Submissions that do not
comply
with this format risk being rejected. The length of regular papers is
limited
to 12 pages, while the length of notes and demos is limited to 6 pages. The
claims of the paper should be fully substantiated, including full proofs or
appropriate experimental data. If this information does not fit within
the page
limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix,
whose length
is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion.

POSTERS
-------

Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related
areas are also solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the
communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear
elsewhere) to the graph drawing community. Authors of posters should
prepare
an abstract (up to two pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted
together with the poster.

CONTEST
-------

Following the tradition of previous conferences, a Graph Drawing Contest
will
be held. Details about the contest will be provided on the conference
Web site.

PUBLICATION
-----------

Accepted papers (regular ones, notes and demos) will appear in the
conference
proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science
series. Twelve pages will be allocated for regular papers and six for notes
and demos. Abstracts of accepted posters will also appear in the conference
proceedings (two pages), but will not be made available for indexing.
Selected papers will be invited for submission to a special issue of the
Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications.

AWARDS
------

For each of the two tracks, the Program Committee of GD 2015 will give a
Best Paper Award. In addition, to recognize the effort of participants to
present their work in a clear and elegant way, there will be a Best
Presentation
Award voted on by the GD 2015 attendees.

SSCI 2015

7-10 December 2015, Cape Town, South Africa

http://ieee-ssci.org/

Cape Town hosts the sixth IEEE Symposium Series on Computational
Intelligence (IEEE SSCI 2015). This international event brings together at
one location several symposia running concurrently, each highlighting
various aspects of computational intelligence, and will attract top
researchers, practitioners, and students from around the world to discuss
the latest advances in the field of computational intelligence.

Computational intelligence techniques have proven useful after numerous
applications in real world problems. However, there is much work to be done
in order to fully understand the theoretical foundations of such
techniques. IEEE FOCI'15, provides an ideal forum for those who are
interested in the fundamental issues of computational intelligence to
exchange their ideas and present their latest findings.

IEEE FOCI'15 will focus on fundamental theoretical and practical
foundations of computational intelligence, including but not limited to
neural networks, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computation, and other machine
learning methods. The symposium will put equal emphasis on theoretical and
practical work as long as it addresses the foundations of computational
intelligence.

Abstract:
In recent years, nanotechnology has emerged as a novel evolution in technology enabling the design of miniaturized devices.
The objective of ?Body Area NanoNetworks: Electromagnetic, Materials and Communications? (BAN2-EMC) special track is to foster this new area of research. BAN2-EMC proposes to be a forum where the current directions of development are discussed by various components supporting health monitoring, medical diagnoses and treatment, telemedicine, sensing, and assistance to people with disabilities.
BAN2-EMC is intended to put in evidence the multi-disciplinary aspects related to body area nanonetworks, with special focus on telecommunications, electromagnetic and biocompatibility issues. The main goal of this special track is to involve researchers and academics from various inter-disciplinary fields. It is expected that such an interaction between scientists coming from electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, bio-engineering, bio-technology, and nanotechnology gives a high added-value to the research outputs in the huge field of body area nanonetworks.

Abstract

Cars have changed significantly over the last years, and will do so in the near future. Especially the integration of more and more sensors, such as camera or radar, and communication technologies opens up a whole new design space for in-vehicle applications. It is expected a different kind of automotive experience, where city streets will teem with small, driverless cars whose wireless capabilities direct traffic flow smoothly, so that to make traffic lights unnecessary. Furthermore, the use of cloud computing technology will enable passengers to work or play games during their commutes, while listening to their favorite music, as chosen by the car based on user profile. Vehicular communications can be considered as the "first social network for automobiles", since each driver can share data with other neighbors. As an instance, heavy traffic is a common occurrence in some areas on the roads (e.g., at intersections, taxi loading/unloading areas, and so on); as a consequence!
, roads become a popular social place for vehicles to connect to each other. Social characteristics and human behavior largely impact on vehicular ad hoc networks, and this arises to the vehicular social networks, which are formed when vehicles (individuals) "socialize" and share common interests.
The goal of this book is to provide the main features of Vehicular Social Networks (VSNs), from novel emerging technologies to social aspects used for mobile applications, as well as main issues and challenges. VSNs are described as decentralized opportunistic communication networks formed among vehicles. They exploit mobility aspects, and basics of traditional social networks, in order to create novel approaches of message exchange through the detection of dynamic social structures. Particular interest will be given to social aspects that are exploited in vehicular communications for both safety and entertainment applications. Indeed, vehicular communications can be considered as the "first social network for automobiles," because each driver can share data with other neighbors.

Selected topics that are covered in this book are related to: social networking techniques, social-based routing techniques applied to vehicular networks, data dissemination in VSNs, architectures for VSNs, as well as novel trends and challenges in VSNs. The book aims to provide significant technical and practical insights in different aspects, starting from a basic background on social networking, the inter-related technologies and applications to vehicular ad-hoc networks, the technical challenges, implementation and future trends.

Chapters dealing with the following aspects (but not limited to) are welcome:

Part I: Basics on Social Networking
Introduction to social networking technologies
Traditional online social networks
Security aspects in social networks
Cooperative aspects in social networks
Part II: From Social Networking to Vehicular Networks
Introduction to VSNs
Sociability aspects in routing for VSNs
Data dissemination in VSNs
Peer-to-peer architectures for VSNs
Resource management in VSNs
Cooperative communications in VSNs
QoS support in VSNs
Data fusion and aggregation in VSNs
Part III: Applications for VSNs
Social-based applications for VSNs
Infotainment in VSNs
Crowdsourcing applications for VSNs
Security, privacy and trust in VSNs
Gaming in vehicular social networks
Incentives and other economic aspects of VSNs

Fully funded Phd position in Game Theory and Machine Learning

This position is defined in the context of the recently started Ariadna
study at the computer science department of the university of Liverpool, in
collaboration with the Advanced Concepts Team (ACT) of the European Space
Agency (ESA): 'Game Theoretic Analysis of the Space debris Removal
Dilemma' This study aims to analyse space debris removal activities from a
strategic, game-theoretical perspective. Space debris is defined as
non-manoeuvrable, human-made objects orbiting Earth. In some orbits, space
debris poses a significant collision risk for an operational spacecraft,
especially in low-Earth orbit (LEO). Currently, there are more than 23,000
objects larger than 5-10cm in Earth orbit.

Within the Clean Space initiative ESA is investigating active debris
removal in addition to mitigation measures to keep the growth of space
debris limited. In cooperation with the national space agencies and
industry partners, ESA is developing mission concepts to clean up and
deorbit space debris. This study contributes to this initiative.
Specifically, the objective is three-fold, one, to model debris
accumulation and active removal efforts as a dynamic game, two, to
determine the optimal time-dependent policies or behaviour assuming both
cooperative and self-interested players, and three, to propose a mechanism
to steer the dynamics of the game to a desirable outcome. It is expected
that such a study will provide a deeper understanding of the space debris
problem and its potential (economic) ramifications, and will provide an
outlook on potential game-theoretic solution strategies.

The investigation will involve mostly (evolutionary) game theory, machine
learning, mechanism design and some experimental simulation work.

The candidate must have a passionate interest in game theory and/or machine
learning, and an interest in space applications.

Prospective candidates must have at least a 2.1 or above Bachelor degree in
a relevant subject (Computer science, Physics, Economics) and should enjoy
mathematical work. Good programming skills are required.

The funding covers EU/UK fees and stipend of approximately ?14,057pa for a
total of 3 years. For informal enquiries please contact prof. dr. K. Tuyls
(k.tuyls@liverpool.ac.uk) or dr. R. Savani (rahul.savani@liverpool.ac.uk).
