(DTU) concerning liner shipping network design

Dear all,

A 3-year PhD position in Operations Research is vacant at DTU Management Engineering. The PhD project is financed by the Danish Council for Strategic Research and by DTU and will be carried out in collaboration with our industrial collaborator Maersk Line.

Responsibilities and tasks?
The PhD project is part of a larger project concerning container liner networks. Container ships usually sail on fixed routes following a fixed schedule, quite similar to how public busses operate. The choice of routes and schedules can have a large impact on the profitability of the container line business and therefore we are interested in applying operations research techniques to optimize the network. A single route may sometimes be operated by several companies in collaboration using vessel sharing agreements. This put further constraints on the network design since it may be complicated to change the routes that are agreed upon by several companies.

The aim of the PhD project is to develop methods for constructing container liner networks and improving existing networks. It is desirable for the method to take vessel sharing agreements into account. When changing an existing network it is desirable to make gentle changes such that the disruption caused by the network re-design will be small. The PhD project will be carried out under the supervision of Professors Stefan R?pke and David Pisinger.

The applicant is also expected to contribute to teaching at the department and must take courses equivalent to 30 ECTS points during the studies.

Qualifications?
The applicant should have a strong background in Operations Research or related subjects. This background must be documented by courses, MSc / BSc theses and/or publications. Good English skills and programming experience is expected.

Further information and application process
Please see?http://www.man.dtu.dk/english/About-the-Department/Vacant-positions?for further information and for applying for the position. For questions, please contact?Professor Stefan R?pke,?ropke@dtu.dk?or Professor David Pisinger,?dapi@dtu.dk.

===============================
MASSIVE 2014 Call for Papers
===============================

Sixth Workshop on Massive Data Algorithmics (MASSIVE 2014) will take
place on September 11, 2014 in Wroc?aw, Poland as part of ALGO 2014
immediately following the European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA).

http://madalgo.au.dk/events/massive-2014/

The workshop has no formal proceedings, so work presented at the
workshop can also be (or have been) presented at other conferences.

===============================

Important Dates:

Submission deadlines:
- Paper submission: July 14, 2014 11:59pm HAST
- Author Notification: July 28, 2014
- Camera-ready version: August 11, 2014

===============================

Aim and scope:

Tremendous advances in our ability to acquire, store and process data,
as well as the pervasive use of computers in general, have resulted in a
spectacular increase in the amount of data being collected. This
availability of high-quality data has led to major advances in both
science and industry. In general, society is becoming increasingly data
driven, and this trend is likely to continue in the coming years.

The increasing number of applications processing massive data means that
in general focus on algorithm efficiency is increasing. However, the
large size of the data, and/or the small size of many modern computing
devices, also means that issues such as memory hierarchy architecture
often play a crucial role in algorithm efficiency. Thus the availability
of massive data also means many new challenges for algorithm designers.

The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for researchers from both
academia and industry interested in algorithms for massive dataset
problems. The scope of the workshop includes both fundamental
algorithmic problems involving massive data, as well as algorithms for
more specialized problems in, e.g., graphics, databases, statistics and
bioinformatics. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- I/O-efficient algorithms
- Cache-oblivious algorithms
- Memory hierarchy efficient algorithms
- Streaming algorithms
- Sublinear algorithms
- Parallel and distributed algorithms for massive data problems
- Engineering massive data algorithms

===============================

Paper submission:

We invite submissions of extended abstracts of original research. The
submission should begin with the title of the paper, each author's name,
affiliation, and e-mail address, followed by a succinct statement of the
problems considered, the main results, an explanation of their
significance, and a comparison to past research, all of which should be
easily understood by non-specialists. More technical developments follow
as appropriate. Use 11-point or larger font in single column format,
with one-inch or wider margins all around. You may include a clearly
marked appendix, which will be read at the discretion of the committee.
The submission, excluding title page, bibliography and appendix, must
not exceed 10 pages (authors should feel free to send submissions that
are significantly shorter than 10 pages).

Extended abstract should be submitted through the EasyChair website by
July 14th. Authors will be notified about acceptance by July 28th. There
will be no formal proceedings, so work presented at the workshop can
also be (or have been) presented at other conferences. An informal
collection of the extended abstracts will be provided to the workshop
participants. An author of each accepted abstract is expected to give a
presentation of the abstract at the workshop.

SUBMISSIONS
We invite authors to submit extended abstracts that should not exceed 4
pages of
original research. In order to guarantee that submissions are in scope
and not below
basic standards, there will be a limited review process. An appendix can
be added
as a help for the reviewers and is required when necessary to verify
omitted proofs
of critical claims. Submission details will be available on the
conference website.

We remark that XVI ECG will have neither formally reviewed proceedings
nor printed
abstracts. The abstracts, without ISBN, will be made available on the
conference
website (appendices excluded), and must be regarded as a collection of
preprints
rather than a formally reviewed selection of papers.

Papers that have just been submitted to journals or to formally reviewed
conferences
are eligible for being presented at XVI ECG, assuming that it is allowed
by those
venues and they have not appeared by the time of the conference.
Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their papers at the
conference.
Failure to do so will result in removal of the contribution everywhere
in the website.
