Workshop "Data Science meets Optimization"
RWTH Aachen, Germany, April 4-5, 2016

With the recent abundant availability of data in many economic and
scientific contexts, there is a need for scientists who can "make
sense of data." Data science, broadly interpreted, touches on
statistics, machine learning, and knowledge discovery.

Optimization, on the other end, wants to "suggest best actions" based
on data. Tremendous progress has been made recently in fields like
integer programming. This workshop aims at bringing together
researchers from data science and optimization (or: predictive and
prescriptive analytics) to foster an exchange in both directions. We
would like to identify avenues on how to attack and contribute to
solving global challenges coming from sectors like energy, mobility,
scarce resources, ageing societies, and the like.

Optimization"

There is a remarkable difference in conference style between computer
science and mathematics conferences. Mathematics conferences allow for
informal presentations that are prepared very shortly before the
conference and inform the participants about current research and work in
progress. The format of computer science conferences with pre-conference
proceedings is not able to accommodate this form of scientific
communication.

Continuing the tradition of past CiE conferences, also this year's CiE
conference endeavours to get the best of both worlds. In addition to the
formal presentations based on our LNCS proceedings volume, we invite
researchers to present informal presentations. For this, please send us a
brief description of your talk (between one paragraph and two pages) by
the DEADLINE:

APRIL 23, 2016

Please submit your abstract electronically, via EasyChair, selecting the
category
"Informal Presentation".

You will be notified whether your talk has been accepted for informal
presentation usually within a week or two after your submission.

Scope:

Over the past fifteen years, research in theoretical computer science,
artificial intelligence, and microeconomics has joined forces to
tackle problems involving incentives and computation. This research
field, commonly named Algorithmic Game Theory, is becoming
increasingly more relevant.

The main aim of this one-day long workshop is to bring together the
rich variety of scientists that IJCAI attracts in order to have a
multidisciplinary forum within which discuss and analyze current and
novel challenges that the research in Algorithmic Game Theory faces.

Submission:

All paper submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated on the basis
of the quality of their contribution, originality, soundness, and
significance. Industrial applications and position papers presenting
novel ideas, issues, challenges and directions are also welcome.
Submissions are invited in, but not limited to, the following topics:

- Algorithmic mechanism design
- Auction algorithms and analysis
- Behavioral Game Theory
- Bounded rationality
- Computational advertising
- Computational aspects of equilibria
- Computational social choice
- Convergence and learning in games
- Coalitions, coordination and collective action
- Economic aspects of security and privacy
- Economic aspects of distributed and network computing
- Information and attention economics
- Network games
- Price differentiation and price dynamics
- Social networks

Submission Guidelines:

Authors are invited to submit a paper of no more than 16 pages,
including references, in LNCS style. All submissions will be
electronic via the EasyChair page for the conference at
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=agtijcai2016. Submissions must
adhere to the specified format and length. All the technical details
that are necessary for a proper scientific evaluation of a submission
must be included in a clearly-labelled appendix, to be consulted at
the discretion of program committee members. Please note that
reviewing will not be double-blinded.

Proceedings Publication:

To widen participation and encourage discussion, there will be no
formal publication of workshop proceedings. (We will, however, collate
the accepted papers to the benefit of the participants to the
workshop.) Therefore, submissions of preliminary work and papers to be
submitted or in preparation for submission to other major venues in
the field are encouraged.

Funded PhD Studentships, Department of Computer Science, Royal
Holloway, University of London, UK.

Applications are invited for funded PhD studentships in the Department
of Computer Science at Royal Holloway, starting on 19th of September
2016. We particularly welcome female applicants as they are
under-represented among our PhD student population.

Some of the studentships have an open topic as long as this is related
to the interests of one of the Department's research groups:
Algorithms and Applications, including complexity theory;
Bioinformatics; Computer Learning; Distributed and Global Computing,
including distributed algorithms; and Software Language Engineering.

These studentships are for three years and include a stipend of circa
£16,000 per year plus a Home/EU fee waiver. Applicants are expected to
have obtained a first-class degree in Computer Science or a cognate
discipline, and must obtain the support of a potential supervisor in
the Department prior to submitting an applications. Initial contact
with supervisors should be made at least two weeks prior to the
closing date for applications.

topic-specific PhD positions funded by the Leverhulme Magna-Carta
Doctoral Training Centre:

A. Market Manipulation and High Frequency Trading in Cryptocurrencies
and other Electronic Markets. Contact: Prof Volodya Vovk
(V.Vovk@rhul.ac.uk). The ideal candidate should have a strong interest
in financial markets, be very mathematically oriented, and willing to
work with large datasets. An MSc (expected by Sept. 2016) in either
Econometrics, Statistics, or Machine learning together with knowledge
of either Matlab, R or Python is required. Closing date: 15 April
2016.

B. Casualties of War: Boosting Accuracy of Conflict Analysis via
Economics Modeling and Data Mining. Contact: Drs Gregory Chockler

We are looking for a student with strong interest in economics and
openness to working with big data and learning computer science
methods or a person with a strong interest in computer science and
openness to learning and integrating economic theory into their work.

C. Observing the Observers: Network Transparency in a Connected World.
Contact: Prof Kostas Stathis (kostas.stathis@rhul.ac.uk). Applicants
should have a first or upper-second class honours degree or an MSc in
Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related discipline and
excellent understanding of computational logic together with software
development skills in Prolog and/or Java. Among desirable skills are
experience with agent architectures, agent protocols, the
formalisation of legal rules as well as the application of computers
in the domain of the law. Closing date: 15 April 2016.
