Data Lab Scholarships for Msc Operational Research and MSc Business Analysis and Consulting

With a generous funding from the Data Lab (http://www.thedatalab.com/), Department of Management Science are delighted to offer up to 4 scholarships towards tuition fees for the MSc Operational Research and MSc Business Analysis and Consulting 2016 entry (full-time only). Applications are open to *Scottish and EU students only*, and each of these scholarships will be worth £9500, covering the full tuition fee. The application deadline is 25 July 2016 Monday. Further details below.

ELIGIBILITY
The applicants are expected to have (or near completion of) a Upper Second Class Honours (undergraduate) degree, or equivalent (a minimum 3.2 GPA in a 4.0 GPA system, or a minimum 85% average, or a minimum average of B+ in a letter system). Final year undergraduate students are eligible to apply.

Candidates interested in applying for these prestigious scholarships are required to provide a brief statement (up to 300 words) in their online applications which should clearly articulate their interest in the growing area of data science and analytics and their reasons for applying for the scholarship.

Applicants must have an offer of a place on the programme.

CONDITIONS AND SELECTION PROCESS
If you are rewarded this scholarship, you will be required to undertake the elective module 'MS979 Analytics for Big Data' for MSc Operational Research students or 'MS980 Business Analytics' for MSc Business Analysis and Consulting students. Funded students will be expected to complete the MSc course, and also to participate in events organised by Data Lab, including the Data Talent Scotland event to be held in Edinburgh on 22nd March 2017 (all travel costs will be reimbursed for these events by the Data Lab).

The selected students will be announced early August. The selection process will be based on your background (in particular the level of your degree) as well as the short statement you provide. Msc Operational Research students will be given preference in the selection process in case of equal standing, however, we strongly encourage MSc Business Analysis and Consulting with a strong standing to apply as well.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN ALGORITHMS RESEARCH AND/OR LOWER BOUNDS

Application deadline 1 August, 2016. Start date negotiable but
ideally by Autumn/Fall 2016.

Salary: 35,609 to £40,082 UK pounds

This is a fixed term appointment terminating end of December 2017.

The Algorithms team in the Department of Computer Science at Bristol
University is looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher in the areas
of algorithms research and/or lower bounds. The post will require a
high level of expertise in areas which may include but not be limited
to data structures/algorithms, discrete probability, discrete
mathematics and combinatorics.

Our current work focuses on algorithms and lower bounds for streaming
and dynamically changing
data however we also have a broader interest in other aspects of
algorithms/theory research.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science
("Track A") or closely related mathematical area together with a
strong track record of international publications in algorithms or
theoretical computer science ("Track A") venues. This may include for
example, ICALP/SODA/STOC/FOCS.

Please see http://bit.ly/29jXodA for full details both of the post and
the application process.

Informal enquires should be made to Raphael Clifford at
clifford@cs.bris.ac.uk .

This ICPAM School will introduce participants to selected topics of
Mathematics with direct applications in privacy and security issues. For
more detailed descriptions of the particular topics covered in the school,
see course outlines. The presentations will include the necessary
background in order to understand the main concepts, as well as many
motivating examples of the application of these topics to particular
security and privacy issues, together with open problems in the
corresponding areas. The aim is to motivate a group of bright students to
continue working in those areas at the doctoral or postdoctoral level. The
school will conclude with presentations by researchers and students.

The school is dedicated to the memory of Professor Mirka Miller who
suggested that it was held in Havana and who made important contributions
in many of the topics to be discussed.
