UNIF 2014 is the 28th event in a series of international meetings
devoted to
unification theory and its applications. Unification is concerned with the
problem of identifying terms, finding solutions for equations, or making
formulas equivalent. It is a fundamental process used in a number of fields
of computer science, including automated reasoning, term rewriting, logic
programming, natural language processing, program analysis, types, etc.
The International Workshop on Unification (UNIF) is a yearly forum for
researchers in unification theory and related fields to meet old and new
colleagues, to present recent (even unfinished) work, and to discuss new
ideas
and trends. It is also a good opportunity for young researchers and
scientists
working in related areas to get an overview of the current state of the
art in
unification theory.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Internet of Things is happening! Wireless sensors and actuators are increasingly networked and continually narrow the gap between the physical world and cyberspace. Domain-specific sensing deployments in industrial or home automation scenarios are becoming more and more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for interfacing with or extending dedicated sensor networks. Nevertheless, insights gathered from real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce and many practical issues in building sensor network applications persist. A thorough understanding from a practical/systems perspective is still necessary, including the hardware platforms of sensor and actor nodes, their operating systems, the networking of nodes and fresh perspectives from field trials and applications.
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Experiences from real-world sensor network deployment and applications
- Innovative sensor network applications
- Mobile and participatory sensing applications and deployments
- Integrating sensor networks and the internet of things
- Middleware support for sensor networks
- Programming and debugging sensor networks
- Security, availability and dependability issues in sensor networks

- Practical problems in implementing localization and time synchronization
- Experiences with communication protocols
- Practical medium access control protocols (MACs)
- Topology control and routing protocols in existing sensor network deployments
- Fault-tolerance and troubleshooting sensor networks
- Antenna design and experiences with signal propagation
- Experiences regarding energy management and network lifetime
- Configuration and installation support
- Management of large-scale sensor networks and sensing campaigns
- Interconnection between IP and sensor networks
- Interfacing with sensor networks using mobile computing devices
- Large-scale open sensor data sets from real deployments
Submitted papers will be reviewed by three independent experts in the field. Proceedings of the workshop will be published together with those of IEEE LCN, and will be available in digital format from the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Full papers should be restricted to 8 camera-ready pages (in 10 pt font, double column, US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches, IEEE format), including text, figures and references. Authors should use only standard fonts, i.e. Times Roman, Courier, Symbol, Helvetica or equivalent. Papers must be submitted electronically via EDAS at:

The 7th International Symposium on Algorithmic Game Theory (SAGT) will
take place in Haifa, Israel, from September 30 to October 2. The purpose
of SAGT is to bring together researchers from Computer Science,
Economics, Physics, Biology and Mathematics to present and discuss
original research at the intersection of Algorithms and Game Theory.
The program of SAGT will include both invited lectures and presentations

Accepted papers are presented in at most 12 pages in the proceedings.

NETWORKS is a 10-year research programme funded by the Dutch Ministry
of Education, Culture and Science through the Netherlands Organisation
for Scientific Research.
The programme will start in the Summer of 2014 and will cover a broad

Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO), is a basic research
center funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The center is
located in the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University,
Denmark, but also includes researchers at CSAIL, Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics and at
Frankfurt University. The center covers all areas of the design,
analysis and implementation of algorithms and data structures for
processing massive data (interpreted broadly to cover computations where
data is large compared to the computational resources), with focus on
I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious and streaming algorithms. See

Starting August 1, 2014 or later, several positions are available at
MADALGO under the supervision of Professor Lars Arge
(www.madalgo.au.dk/~large), Associate Professor Gerth S. Brodal
(www.madalgo.au.dk/~gerth) and Assistant Professor Peyman Afshani
(www.madalgo.au.dk/~peyman):
Several PhD student positions are available. The positions are
administered through Graduate School of Science and Technology at Aarhus
University (talent.au.dk/phd/scienceandtechnology) and include full
tuition waiver and a very competitive scholarship. Applications are
welcomed from students with at least three years of full-time study by
August 2014. Students with a strong background in the design and
analysis of algorithms will be preferred.
One or more MADALGO postdoc positions at the level of Research Assistant
Professor of Computer Science are also available. Postdoc positions are
initially for one year, but can be extended with an additional year by
mutual consent. MADALGO welcomes postdoctoral researchers with clearly
demonstrated experience and skills in the design and analysis of
algorithms and data structures. Researchers with experience with
I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious or streaming algorithms, as well as with
implementation of such algorithms (algorithm engineering experience) are
preferred. The responsibilities of MADALGO postdocs include work on
algorithms for massive dataset problems in collaboration with center
researchers, along with modest teaching responsibilities.

NETWORKS is a 10-year research programme funded by the Dutch Ministry
of Education, Culture and Science through the Netherlands Organisation
for Scientific Research.
The programme will start in the Summer of 2014 and will cover a broad
range of topics dealing with stochastic and algorithmic aspects of
networks. The aim of the programme is to address the pressing challenges
posed by large-scale networks using stochastics and algorithms. The

Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO), is a basic research
center funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The center is
located in the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University,
Denmark, but also includes researchers at CSAIL, Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics and at
Frankfurt University. The center covers all areas of the design,
analysis and implementation of algorithms and data structures for
processing massive data (interpreted broadly to cover computations where
data is large compared to the computational resources), with focus on
I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious and streaming algorithms. See

Starting August 1, 2014 or later, several positions are available at
MADALGO under the supervision of Professor Lars Arge
(www.madalgo.au.dk/~large), Associate Professor Gerth S. Brodal

(www.madalgo.au.dk/~peyman):
Several PhD student positions are available. The positions are
administered through Graduate School of Science and Technology at Aarhus
University (talent.au.dk/phd/scienceandtechnology) and include full
tuition waiver and a very competitive scholarship. Applications are
welcomed from students with at least three years of full-time study by
August 2014. Students with a strong background in the design and
analysis of algorithms will be preferred.
One or more MADALGO postdoc positions at the level of Research Assistant
Professor of Computer Science are also available. Postdoc positions are
initially for one year, but can be extended with an additional year by
mutual consent. MADALGO welcomes postdoctoral researchers with clearly
demonstrated experience and skills in the design and analysis of
algorithms and data structures. Researchers with experience with
I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious or streaming algorithms, as well as with
implementation of such algorithms (algorithm engineering experience) are
preferred. The responsibilities of MADALGO postdocs include work on
algorithms for massive dataset problems in collaboration with center
researchers, along with modest teaching responsibilities.

A PhD or Postdoc position is available in the "Combinatorial Optimization and Graph Algorithms Group" at TU Berlin (www.coga.tu-berlin.de), supported by the newly established DFG Priority Programme 1736 "Algorithms for Big Data". The task of the successful applicant is to develop new theoretical insights for a better understanding of the complexity of discrete optimization problems and algorithms with exponential output size. In particular, algorithms for time-dependent routing problems will be studied.
Candidates should have an excellent academic degree in mathematics, computer science or a related area, and must have very good knowledge in algorithmic discrete mathematics and/or algorithm theory. Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are expected. Special knowledge on time-dependent routing problems and complexity theory are desirable.

After the ICABD 2014 Conference (http://algorithms-for-big-data.org/) and StringMasters Spring 2014 workshop (http://stringmasters.unipa.it/) to be shortly held in Palermo, we are happy to announce a special issue of Mathematics in Computer Science devoted to them.
The special issue is motivated by the desire to give people who will present their contributes at the 2nd International Conference on Algorithms for Big Data as well as the participants to the Spring 2014 edition of StringMasters workshop the opportunity to publish extended papers on their work. Beside ICABD 2014 extended contributions and StringMasters Spring 2014 outcomes, any original paper fitting the present Call for Papers will be adequately considered for publication. Same as the ICABD conference, this special issue main topics are the application of mathematical theories and methods to big data, primarily collections of biological sequences such as DNA/RNA and proteomic sequences. A list of representative topics follows.
1. Mathematical methods for sequence matching, sequence compression, and information retrieval;
2. Algorithms for sequence indexing, approximate indexing, and compressed indexing;
3. In place data structures, space conscious data structures, and external memory algorithms;
4. Mathematical results with applications in bioinformatics problems;
5. Combinatorial aspects of biological sequences and collections;
6. Algorithms and data structures for repetition discovery and motif recognition;
7. Mathematical methods for fragment assembly, reads reassembly, and genome alignments;
8. Mathematical methods for phylogenetic trees construction and comparison;

We encourage the submission of original papers (preferably more than 12 pages) that present high-quality contributions that are the full version of the papers presented at ICABD 2014 or novel scientific outcomes obtained from the scientific collaborations taking place at StringMasters Spring 2014 that have not been previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere.
If you intend to submit a paper to the MCS special issue, you are requested to send a brief preliminary e-mail showing your intention to specialissue@algorithms-for-big-data.org, by 15 April 2014. In this e-mail you have to specify the title of the paper, the list of authors and the approximate
number of pages.

The 9th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation
(IPEC 2014) covers research in all aspects of parameterized/exact
algorithms and complexity. Papers presenting original research in the
area are sought, including but not limited to: new techniques for the
design and analysis of parameterized and exact algorithms,
fixed-parameter tractability results, parameterized complexity theory,
relationship between parameterized complexity and traditional complexity
classifications, applications of parameterized and exact computation,
and implementation issues of parameterized and exact algorithms. In
particular, studies on parameterized and exact computations for
real-world applications and algorithmic engineering are especially
encouraged.
IPEC 2014 will be part of ALGO 2014, which also hosts ESA 2014 and a
number of more specialized conferences and workshops. ALGO 2014 will
take place September 8-12, 2014, Wroc?aw, Poland
Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract in English no longer
than 12 pages (excluding appendices) using at least 11-point font, in
LNCS-style, describing original unpublished research. Simultaneous
submission to other conferences with published proceedings is not
permitted. Additional details as necessary may be included in a clearly
marked appendix that will be read at the discretion of the program
committee. Authors must submit their papers electronically. A detailed
description of the electronic submission process is available at the
symposium website. Program committee members (except the co-chairs) are
allowed to submit papers.
Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings in the
Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Authors of accepted
papers are expected to present their work at the symposium, and to
incorporate the comments from the program committee.
The program committee may award an Excellent Student Paper Award to one
or more papers accepted to the symposium. A paper is eligible for the
award if all authors are students at the time of submission, where a
student is someone who has not been awarded a PhD before the paper
submission deadline.
Additionally this year there will be a poster session, hence authors are
also invited to submit their posters to IPEC 2014.
SPECIAL ISSUE OF ALGORITHMICA
Selected papers of IPEC 2014 will be invited for a special issue of
Algorithmica.
EATCS-IPEC NERODE PRIZE 2014
The 2014 EATCS-IPEC Nerode Prize for outstanding papers in the area of
multivariate algorithmics will be awarded during IPEC 2014 to Hans L.
Bodlaender, Rodney G. Downey, Michael R. Fellows, Lance Fortnow, Danny
Hermelin, and Rahul Santhanam. Hans L. Bodlaender will give an invited
talk at IPEC 2014.

A PhD or Postdoc position is available in the "Combinatorial Optimization and Graph Algorithms Group" at TU Berlin (www.coga.tu-berlin.de), supported by the newly established DFG Priority Programme 1736 "Algorithms for Big Data". The task of the successful applicant is to develop new theoretical insights for a better understanding of the complexity of discrete optimization problems and algorithms with exponential output size. In particular, algorithms for time-dependent routing problems will be studied.
Candidates should have an excellent academic degree in mathematics, computer science or a related area, and must have very good knowledge in algorithmic discrete mathematics and/or algorithm theory. Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are expected. Special knowledge on time-dependent routing problems and complexity theory are desirable.

After the ICABD 2014 Conference (http://algorithms-for-big-data.org/) and StringMasters Spring 2014 workshop (http://stringmasters.unipa.it/) to be shortly held in Palermo, we are happy to announce a special issue of Mathematics in Computer Science devoted to them.
The special issue is motivated by the desire to give people who will present their contributes at the 2nd International Conference on Algorithms for Big Data as well as the participants to the Spring 2014 edition of StringMasters workshop the opportunity to publish extended papers on their work. Beside ICABD 2014 extended contributions and StringMasters Spring 2014 outcomes, any original paper fitting the present Call for Papers will be adequately considered for publication. Same as the ICABD conference, this special issue main topics are the application of mathematical theories and methods to big data, primarily collections of biological sequences such as DNA/RNA and proteomic sequences. A list of representative topics follows.
1. Mathematical methods for sequence matching, sequence compression, and information retrieval;
2. Algorithms for sequence indexing, approximate indexing, and compressed indexing;
3. In place data structures, space conscious data structures, and external memory algorithms;
4. Mathematical results with applications in bioinformatics problems;
5. Combinatorial aspects of biological sequences and collections;
6. Algorithms and data structures for repetition discovery and motif recognition;
7. Mathematical methods for fragment assembly, reads reassembly, and genome alignments;
8. Mathematical methods for phylogenetic trees construction and comparison;
9. Combinatorial measures of sequence similarity.

We encourage the submission of original papers (preferably more than 12 pages) that present high-quality contributions that are the full version of the papers presented at ICABD 2014 or novel scientific outcomes obtained from the scientific collaborations taking place at StringMasters Spring 2014 that have not been previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

IPEC 2014
The 9th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation
Wroc?aw, Poland, September 10-12, 2014

The 9th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation
(IPEC 2014) covers research in all aspects of parameterized/exact
algorithms and complexity. Papers presenting original research in the
area are sought, including but not limited to: new techniques for the
design and analysis of parameterized and exact algorithms,
fixed-parameter tractability results, parameterized complexity theory,
relationship between parameterized complexity and traditional complexity
classifications, applications of parameterized and exact computation,
and implementation issues of parameterized and exact algorithms. In
particular, studies on parameterized and exact computations for
real-world applications and algorithmic engineering are especially
encouraged.
IPEC 2014 will be part of ALGO 2014, which also hosts ESA 2014 and a
number of more specialized conferences and workshops. ALGO 2014 will
take place September 8-12, 2014, Wroc?aw, Poland
Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract in English no longer
than 12 pages (excluding appendices) using at least 11-point font, in
LNCS-style, describing original unpublished research. Simultaneous
submission to other conferences with published proceedings is not
permitted. Additional details as necessary may be included in a clearly
marked appendix that will be read at the discretion of the program
committee. Authors must submit their papers electronically. A detailed
description of the electronic submission process is available at the
symposium website. Program committee members (except the co-chairs) are
allowed to submit papers.
Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings in the
Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Authors of accepted
papers are expected to present their work at the symposium, and to
incorporate the comments from the program committee.
The program committee may award an Excellent Student Paper Award to one
or more papers accepted to the symposium. A paper is eligible for the
award if all authors are students at the time of submission, where a
student is someone who has not been awarded a PhD before the paper
submission deadline.
Additionally this year there will be a poster session, hence authors are
also invited to submit their posters to IPEC 2014.
SPECIAL ISSUE OF ALGORITHMICA
Selected papers of IPEC 2014 will be invited for a special issue of
Algorithmica.
EATCS-IPEC NERODE PRIZE 2014
The 2014 EATCS-IPEC Nerode Prize for outstanding papers in the area of
multivariate algorithmics will be awarded during IPEC 2014 to Hans L.
Bodlaender, Rodney G. Downey, Michael R. Fellows, Lance Fortnow, Danny
Hermelin, and Rahul Santhanam. Hans L. Bodlaender will give an invited
talk at IPEC 2014.

The Prize for Innovation In Distributed Computing was established to
recognize individuals whose research contributions expanded the collective
investigative horizon in SIROCCO's area of interest. That is, they
formulated new problems, or identified new research areas, that were at
the time of their introduction, unorthodox and outside the mainstream, but
later attracted the interest of the SIROCCO community.
This community is interested in the relationships between information and
efficiency in decentralized computing. The prize recognizes originality,
innovation, and creativity -- the qualities that reflect the spirit of the
SIROCCO conference.
SIROCCO 2014 is going to be held on July 23 - 25, 2014, Hida Takayama,
Japan; papers submission deadline is April 25, 2014; invited speakers are:
Yuval Emek, Friedhelm Meyer auf der Heide, Rotem Oshman, Gopal
Pandurangan, and Michel Raynal. The prize winner too will be invited to
give a presentation at SIROCCO.
The prize is presented at the annual meeting of the SIROCCO conference, but
may not necessarily be awarded every year.
Past prize winners are Nicola Santoro, Jean-Claude Bermond, David Peleg,
Roger Wattenhofer, and Andrzej Pelc.
Eligibility
The following conditions must be met by the nominees to be eligible for
the prize.
(1) The original innovative contribution was introduced by the nominee(s)
for the first time in a publication at least five years before the
nomination deadline, and the publication must have appeared in a
conference proceedings or a scientific journal.
(2) At least one paper (co)authored by the nominee(s), either the original

AIM:
SSTiC 2014 is the second edition in a series started in 2013. For the
previous event, see http://grammars.grlmc.com/SSTiC2013/
SSTiC 2014 will be a research training event mainly addressed to PhD
students and PhD holders in the first steps of their academic career. It
intends to update them about the most recent developments in the diverse
branches of computer science and its neighbouring areas. To that purpose,
renowned scholars will lecture and will be available for interaction with
the audience.
SSTiC 2014 will cover the whole spectrum of computer science through 6
keynote lectures and 24 six-hour courses dealing with some of the most
lively topics in the field. The organizers share the idea that outstanding
speakers will really attract the brightest students.
ADDRESSED TO:
Graduate students from around the world. There are no formal pre-requisites
in terms of the academic degree the attendee must hold. However, since there
will be several levels among the courses, reference may be made to specific
knowledge background in the description of some of them.
SSTiC 2014 is also appropriate for more senior people who want to keep
themselves updated on developments in their own field or in other branches
of computer science. They will surely find it fruitful to listen and discuss
with scholars who are main references in computing nowadays.

The selection of up to 8 courses requested in the registration template is
only tentative and non-binding. For the sake of organization, it will be
helpful to have an approximation of the respective demand for each course.
Since the capacity of the venue is limited, registration requests will be
processed on a first come first served basis. The registration period will
be closed when the capacity of the venue will be complete. It is very
convenient to register prior to the event.
FEES:
As far as possible, participants are expected to attend for the whole (or
most of the) week (full-time). Fees are a flat rate allowing one to
participate to all courses. They vary depending on the registration
deadline.

*Scope*
The SWANSITY workshop aims to solicit contributions on novel algorithms,
methodological studies and experimentations on how to make a city-wide
network infrastructure able to self-adapt to the dynamic requirements posed
by the users and by the applications, to manage the complexity of
heterogeneous devices and access technologies, and to guarantee robust,
ubiquitous, and secure connectivity over the urban environments. At the
same time, beside studying the issues of the city-wide infrastructure
deployment, the workshop aims to investigate the potential provided by the
end-users devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) when augmented with
self-organization capabilities, in order to turn them into active components
of the smart-city network, instead of mere connection end-points. Such a
potential includes the possibility to extend the network access in a
pervasive way, to provide ubiquitous computing services, and to favor the
emergence of ?collectivity intelligence behaviors? through
collaboration and direct communication among devices.
In line with such objectives, original contributions are solicited in topics
of interest including, but not limited to, the following:
- Models of network components? interactions on a smart-city
- Techniques and tools for modeling self-organizing wireless networks on
large-scale urban environments
- Self-organizing wireless networks for pervasive urban access
- Self-organizing and self-repairing wireless networks for disaster
recovery
- Dynamic resource allocation schemes for urban environments
- Evolutionary design of wireless network components and devices
- Enabling technologies and algorithms for self-configuring wireless nodes
- Self-organizing femtocell and cognitive radio networks
- Cooperative Smart Objects supporting Wireless Networks Interoperability
- Decision making strategies for software defined radio devices
- Emerging collective intelligence in self-organizing wireless networks
- Network virtualization for heterogeneous wireless networks
- Bio-inspired models for self-organizing wireless networks
- Controlled mobility algorithms for self-placing wireless networks
- Self-organizing networks through Device-2-Device technology (D2D)
- Business model to promote users collaboration and resources sharing
- Security, Privacy and Trust issues in Self-organizing wireless networks
Prospective authors are invited to submit original technical paper by the
deadline of 31 March 2014. Submissions will be accepted through EDAS.
All submissions must be written in English and be at most six (6) printed
pages in length, including figures.

AIM:
SSTiC 2014 is the second edition in a series started in 2013. For the
previous event, see http://grammars.grlmc.com/SSTiC2013/
SSTiC 2014 will be a research training event mainly addressed to PhD
students and PhD holders in the first steps of their academic career. It
intends to update them about the most recent developments in the diverse
branches of computer science and its neighbouring areas. To that purpose,
renowned scholars will lecture and will be available for interaction with
the audience.
SSTiC 2014 will cover the whole spectrum of computer science through 6
keynote lectures and 24 six-hour courses dealing with some of the most
lively topics in the field. The organizers share the idea that outstanding
speakers will really attract the brightest students.
ADDRESSED TO:
Graduate students from around the world. There are no formal pre-requisites
in terms of the academic degree the attendee must hold. However, since there
will be several levels among the courses, reference may be made to specific
knowledge background in the description of some of them.
SSTiC 2014 is also appropriate for more senior people who want to keep
themselves updated on developments in their own field or in other branches
of computer science. They will surely find it fruitful to listen and discuss
with scholars who are main references in computing nowadays.
REGIME:
In addition to keynotes, 3 parallel sessions will be held during the whole
event. Participants will be able to freely choose the courses they will be
willing to attend as well as to move from one to another.

The selection of up to 8 courses requested in the registration template is
only tentative and non-binding. For the sake of organization, it will be
helpful to have an approximation of the respective demand for each course.
Since the capacity of the venue is limited, registration requests will be
processed on a first come first served basis. The registration period will
be closed when the capacity of the venue will be complete. It is very
convenient to register prior to the event.
FEES:
As far as possible, participants are expected to attend for the whole (or
most of the) week (full-time). Fees are a flat rate allowing one to
participate to all courses. They vary depending on the registration
deadline.
ACCOMMODATION:
Information about accommodation is available on the website of the School.
CERTIFICATE:
Participants will be delivered a certificate of attendance.
