SCOPE AND OVERVIEW
__________________
Challenged networks comprise those situations where communication is desired,
but traditional Internet architectures fail to provide it effectively.
Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous
mix of nodes, nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Traditional
examples of challenged networks include inter-planetary networks, sensor and
wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, rural and remote areas,
and military battlefields. Recently, challenged networking has also found
applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived,
such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications,
traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud computing,
opportunistic and participatory sensing. Inter-disciplinary approaches to
challenged networking protocols are also successfully explored, exploiting,
for example, findings in the area of social networking.
The availability of enabling technologies in mobile devices, such as
WiFi direct in Android and D2D communication in latest LTE releases, will
further push towards practical developments of challenged networking solutions.
This workshop builds on the success of the eight previous CHANTS workshops,
and WDTN 2005, to stimulate research on the most novel and challenging topics
of challenged network research. CHANTS provides an ideal venue for researchers
and engineers to present cutting-edge work and results, as research papers or demos,
in the following topics:
- Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs)
- Opportunistic communication and computing
- Architecture, design, and implementation of communication systems
for challenged networks
- Modeling, analysis and characterization of challenged networks and protocols
- Network Coding in Challenged Networks
- Information Centric and Content-centric Networking in Challenged Networks
- Security/Trust/Privacy concerns and solutions in challenged networks
- Case studies involving real challenged network solutions in various stages
of development or use
- Applications of challenged networks in disrupted scenarios
(e.g. disaster relief and emergency management) and in daily use
(e.g., vehicular networks, mobile social networking, censorship evasion, crowdsourcing,
sensor networks)
- Green and energy-efficient communication using challenged networks
- Real-world mobility trace collection, analysis, and modeling for challenged environments
- Network science methods for challenged networks
- Mobile data offloading via challenged networks
- Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems
- Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks
- Challenged networking techniques for mobile cloud
- Challenged networking techniques for participatory and opportunistic sensing
Selected papers will be forward-looking, will describe their relationship
to existing work, and will have impact and implications for ongoing or future research.
We aim to have a highly interactive workshop, also including demos, which have been
an integral part of CHANTS. Paper authors who can also run a demo of their work will be
encouraged to do so. In exceptional cases, where live demos are simply not practical
to present, poster or video presentations of practical results are acceptable.

2nd Call for the participation in the upcoming Competition on Permutation-based

Code Release: March 1, 2014.
Submissions: June 1, 2014.
Publication: July 12-16, 2014.
--------------------------------------------- Description ---------------------------------------------
This competition is designed with the objective of providing a first overview of the current
state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms for solving permutation-based optimization problems.
In the last years, the analysis and solution of these permutation-based combinatorial optimization
problems has become one of the most challenging fields in mathematics as well as in computer
science. Many works in the literature have provided exact, heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms
for solving specific permutation-problems, but usually these works are compared with a low
number of problems and algorithms. In this sense, the aim of the competition is to evaluate and
compare as many algorithms as possible, on a wide set of problems. In this regard, the competition
organizers provide a code framework and a benchmark of a broad set of instances of classical
combinatorial optimization problems:
- Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP),
- Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem (PFSP),
- Linear Ordering Problem (LOP),
- Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP).
In addition, we propose a benchmark of artificially generated instances, where each instance
has been customized in relation with the number of local optima and the size of the attraction
basins, in order to describe specific shape landscapes.
Both code framework and instances are available at the homepage of the competition.
Even though there is no restriction about the type of algorithm to submit, we encourage
competitors to propose innovative and efficient algorithms, so that this competition can be
a forum for new ideas.
------------------------------------------------- Results -----------------------------------------
As a result of the competition, a report with results, statistical analysis and discussion on the
submitted proposals to the GECCO 2014 Competition on Permutation-based Combinatorial
Optimization Problems will be published. The finalists selected by the organizers will be
invited to present their submission at the competition session, to be held during the GECCO
2014 conference. The winner of the competition will be announced at the end of this session.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The guidelines of the competition, the submission details and all the information needed to
participate can be found at the homepage of the competition:
http://www.sc.ehu.es/ccwbayes/Competition_GECCO2014/index.html
or by contacting the organizers by email at:
competition.gecco2014@ehu.es
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be greatly appreciated if news of this event could be passed on to any colleagues who
might be interested in submitting contributions to the Competition on Permutation-based
Combinatorial Optimization Problems.
This is a very innovative competition and the resulting conclusions will be a useful tool for the
scientific community! We look forward to your proposal!

2nd Call for the participation in the upcoming Competition on Permutation-based
Combinatorial Optimization Problems to be held at the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation
Conference (GECCO-2014), July 12th-16th, 2014, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

We look forward to your proposal!

years of international experience in delivering value to customers.
Research topic:
One of the important challenges in today's operations in Supply Chain,
Manufacturing and Logistics is to close the gap between planning and
execution. In many cases, the recommendations of planning systems
cannot be executed due to the necessary approximations considered at
the planning level; in all cases, changes in the short term require
quickly adapting the existing plans to the new situation.
This challenge can be managed by creating more realistic and more
robust plans. The goal of the robust optimization framework is to
determine solutions which behave the best in all the possible
scenarios, or can be easily adjusted according to the changes of input
data. In this context the integration of "sense and respond"
capabilities in planning system becomes critical. A "sense and
respond" system aims at proposing adjustments to an existing plan
based on the knowledge of the environment in near real-time.
The objective of this thesis is to study optimization models that
effectively manage these new challenges. These newly developed
optimization models will focus on real-world customer problems and
real-world applications in the area of Manufacturing and Logistic
Operations.
Applicants should have a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering or
Computer Science (or equivalent) and an affinity with algorithms and
software. Some experience in implementation and computational tests is
expected. Fluency in English is necessary. Candidates should be
willing to immerse in an industrial environment.
Interested candidates should apply as soon as possible. Inquiries and
applications including a detailed CV, a motivation and reference
letters, a record of attended courses (with grades), and a copy of the
Master's thesis should be addressed to:

Objectives of the Workshop
Agent-Based Simulation Models are an increasingly popular tool for
research and management in many fields such as ecology, economics,
sociology, etc.. In some fields, such as social sciences, these models
are seen as a key instrument to the generative approach, essential for
understanding complex social phenomena. But also in policy-making,
biology, military simulations, control of mobile robots and economics,
the relevance and effectiveness of Agent-Based Simulation Models is
recently recognized.
Computer science community has responded to the need for platforms
that can help the development and testing of new models in each
specific field by providing tools, libraries and frameworks that speed
up and make massive simulations possible.
The key objective of this Second Workshop on Parallel and Distributed
Agent-Based Simulations is to bring together the researchers that are
interested in getting more performances from their simulations, by
using synchronized, many-core simulations (e.g., GPUs), strongly
coupled, parallel simulations (e.g. MPI) and loosely coupled,
distributed simulations (distributed heterogeneous setting).
Several frameworks have been recently developed and are active in this
field. They range from the GPU-Manycore approach, to Parallel, to
Distributed simulation environments. In the first category, you can
find FLAME GPU, that allows also non GPU specialists to harness the
GPUs performance for real time simulation and visualization. For
tightly-coupled, large computing clusters and supercomputers a very
popular framework is Repast for High Performance Computing
(REPAST-HPC), a C++-based modeling system. On the distributed side,
recent work on Distributed MASON, allows non specialists to use
heterogeneous hardware and software in local area networks for
enlarging the size and speeding up the simulation of complex
Agent-Based models.
Topics of interest
Frameworks for parallel/distributed ABSs
Case studies of ABSs in parallel/distributed settings, with an
emphasis on the technical implementation, architectural choices and
their impact on performances
Benchmark parallel/distributed ABSs
Debugging parallel/distributed ABSs
Formal methods and algorithms for ABSs in parallel/distributed models
Load Balancing algorithms, techniques and frameworks
Management and deployment of parallel/distributed ABSs
Visualization of parallel/distributed ABSs
Paper submission
The papers will be presented in the regular format (10 pages LNCS format,
5 pages for short papers) and will be reviewed, anonymously by at least 2
reviewers of the Program Committee. Acceptance as regular/short papers will
depend upon scientific value, originality and relevance to the Workshop theme.
Euro-Par Workshops Proceedings will be published by Springer in the Lecture
Notes for Computer Science series after the Workshops. Submissions and
reviewing will be through EasyChair via
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=europar2014ws

PRIVACY IN STATISTICAL DATABASES 2014 (PSD 2014)
================================================
FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS: ***DEADLINE EXTENSION MAY 18, 2014***
Eivissa, Balearic Islands, Sep. 17-19, 2014
http://unescoprivacychair.urv.cat/psd2014
1. AIMS AND GOALS
-----------------
Privacy in statistical databases is about finding tradeoffs to the
tension between the increasing societal and economical demand for
accurate information and the legal and ethical obligation to protect
the privacy of individuals and enterprises which are the respondents
providing the statistical data. In the case of statistical databases,
the motivation for respondent privacy is one of survival: statistical
agencies or survey institutes cannot expect to collect accurate
information from individual or corporate respondents unless these feel
the privacy of their responses is guaranteed.
Beyond respondent privacy, there are two additional privacy dimensions
to be considered: privacy for the data owners (organizations owning or
gathering the data, who would not like to share the data they have
collected at great expense) and privacy for the users (those who
submit queries to the database and would like their analyses to stay
private).
"Privacy in Statistical Databases 2014" (PSD 2014) is a conference
sponsored and organized by the UNESCO Chair in Data Privacy
(http://unescoprivacychair.urv.cat) with proceedings published by
Springer-Verlag in Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Its purpose is
to attract world-wide, high-level research in statistical database
privacy.
PSD 2014 is a successor to PSD 2012 (Palermo, Sep. 26-28, 2012,
http://unescoprivacychair.urv.cat/psd2012), PSD 2010 (Corfu, Sep.
22-24, 2010, http://unescoprivacychair.urv.cat/psd2010), PSD 2008
(Istanbul, Sep. 24-26, 2008,
http://unescoprivacychair.urv.cat/psd2008), PSD 2006 (Rome, Dec.
13-15, 2006, http://crises-deim.urv.cat/psd2006) and PSD 2004
(Barcelona, June 9-11, 2004, http://crises-deim.urv.cat/psd2004), all
with proceedings published by Springer in LNCS 7556, LNCS 6344, LNCS
5262, LNCS 4302 and LNCS 3050, respectively. Those six PSD conferences
follow a tradition of high-quality technical conferences on SDC which
started with "Statistical Data Protection-SDP'98", held in Lisbon in
1998 and with proceedings published by OPOCE, and continued with the
AMRADS project SDC Workshop, held in Luxemburg in 2001 and with
proceedings published in Springer LNCS 2316.
Like the aforementioned preceding conferences, PSD 2014 originates in
Europe, but wishes to stay a worldwide event in database privacy and
SDC. Thus, contributions and attendees from overseas are welcome.

================================================

SYNOPSIS AND GOAL
Software Defined Networking is undoubtedly one of the chief trends in the
ICT area. In the past years we have seen all big players in the networking
arena starting to ride the SDN. Standardization work is actively ongoing in
the Open Networking Forum (ONF), the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
(e.g., I2RS, freshly formed Service Function Chaining (SFC) workgroup or
recent initiatives to form VNFPool), while the European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI) just released several group specifications on
Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). On top of the several existing
open-source SDN controllers, OpenDaylight reached significant momentum last
year and arrived to its first official release in February 2014.
One goal of the workshop is to bring together industry and academia on the
topics of SDN; in particular the workshop will feature an "industry forum",
i.e., a session with presentations of key industrial players.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WORKSHOP
We are interested in both papers showing consolidated results and in
position papers bringing up innovative ideas. Topics for contributions
include, but are not limited to, the following:
-????????????? Virtualization architectures
-????????????? Forwarding abstractions, APIs, object models
-????????????? Network Function Virtualization and SDN, network
virtualization techniques
-????????????? Optical extensions to OpenFlow, SDN

Dear all,
I am re-publishing the call for the ACP Summer School 2014, which will be held coming June in Bologna. Compared to previous calls for the same event, we have granted a deadline extension (both for registering and for booking rooms).
The summer school will cover topics related to Constraint Programming, Hybrid Methods (in particular CP and Operations Research), and the application of such techniques to real world problems.
The school is meant for both optimisation researchers and practitioners.
In my humble (and a bit biased!) opinion, thanks to the combination of hands-on sessions and high-quality lectures, this school could be a great occasion to know about Constraint Programming and Hybrids, to study such techniques in deeper detail, and to hear first-hand experience about their application on practical problems.?
Best regards,
Michele

CALL FOR PAPERS: DEADLINE EXTENDED!
EWSDN 2014: 3rd European Workshop on Software Defined Networks
?
http://ewsdn.eu
1-3 September 2014 in Budapest, Hungary.
IMPORTANT DATES
.????????????? Paper registration: * 18 May 2014 * (firm)
.????????????? Paper submission: * 18 May 2014 * (firm)
.????????????? Notification of acceptance: 1 July 2014
.????????????? Camera ready papers due: 1 August 2014
.????????????? Conference dates: 1-3 September 2014
-????????????? Wireless integration, characterization of wireless
interfaces, flows, handover support
-????????????? Evolved packet core, LTE support for OpenFlow
-????????????? New controller architectures, APIs and northbound interfaces
-????????????? Interoperation of cloud architectures and SDN
-????????????? New switch architectures supporting SDN
-????????????? New networking paradigms like Information Centric Networks
(ICN) and relation to SDN
-????????????? Security implications of SDN and security enhancements to
SDN, as well as new security services enabled by SDN
-????????????? Carrier-grade SDN architectures and equipment
-????????????? Practical experiments on SDN/Cloud/OpenFlow
-????????????? Testbeds
-????????????? Identification of use cases for SDN, SDN related business
models, strategic role of SDN in network evolution
-????????????? Regulatory aspects around network virtualization
-????????????? SDN frameworks and tools, SDN based equipment: controllers,
switches, integrated development environment, testing and debugging
environment.
