Dear colleagues!

This is the first announcement of the workshop

"Tractable special cases of hard combinatorial optimization problems",
www.opt.math.tu-graz.ac.at/scco14

we will be hosting at the Department of Optimization and Discrete
Mathematics
of the Graz University of Technology from December 15 to December 16,
2014.

This will be a two-day, single stream event focussing at polynomially
solvable or approximable
special cases of provably hard combinatorial optimization problems.
This line of research deals with NP-hard combinatorial optimization
problems which become
polynomially tractable if specific structural properties are imposed on
their input.
The identification of the sometimes thin boarderline between hard and
tractable cases
is often a hard and interesting challenge.

The workshop will host invited talks in the mornings as well as
contributed talks and discussions
or working sessions in the afternoons.

Confirmed invited speakers are:

* Vladimir Deineko, Warwick Business School, UK
* Abraham Punnen, Simon Fraser University, Canada
* Frits Spieksma, KU Leuven, Belgium
* Gerhard Woeginger, Eindhoven Unioversity of Technology, The Netherlands

We herewith invite you to participate in the workshop and submit a
contribution related
to the workshop topic.

The workshop venue is the building of the Department of Optimization and
Discrete Mathematics,
Graz University of Technology, Steyrergasse 30, 8010 Graz, Austria.

There will be a small participation fee payable on site. This will
cover
the lunches on December 15 and 16 and the refreshments during the
workshop breaks.
The participants will be responsable for their own travel and
accomodation expenses.

Important Dates:

* October 31, 2104: Deadline for the submission of contributed talks
* November 15, 2014: Registration deadline
* December 15-16, 2014: Workshop

We are looking forward to meeting you in Graz. Please do not hesitate to
contact us for any additional information.

Best regards,
Eranda Cela and Bettina Klinz

Dear DMANET subscibers,

We would like to bring to your attention the one-day Utrecht
Combinatorics Workshop, that will take place Friday 7 November 2014 on
the campus of the
University of Utrecht. Utrecht is a picturesque old city in the center
of the Netherlands.
We are very pleased to announce that the following three
world-renowned combinatorialists have agreed to deliver plenary talks:

- Tomasz ?uczak (Emory U. and Adam Mickiewicz U.)
- Lex Schrijver (CWI and U. of Amsterdam)
- Tibor Szabo (FU Berlin)

In addition to these three talks, there will be a number of shorter
talks by researchers in the early stages of their career.
Currently there are still a few (very few) slots left for such talks.

The workshop is open to all and free of charge, but please register by
sending us an e-mail if you plan to attend.

The website of the workshop can be found at:
http://www.math.uu.nl/~muell001/oneday/index.html

Sincerely,

Ross Kang and Tobias Muller

The Institute for Logic, Language & Computation (ILLC) at the University
of Amsterdam, and the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) are looking
for a PhD candidate in the area of quantum cryptography under the
supervision of Dr. Christian Schaffner.

The aim of the PhD project is to develop new quantum-cryptographic
protocols (beyond the task of key distribution) and explore their
possibilities and limitations. An example of an active research topic is
position-based quantum cryptography. Another aspect is to investigate
the security of classical cryptographic schemes against quantum
adversaries (post-quantum cryptography).

Full-time appointment is on a temporary basis for a period of four
years. For the first two years the PhD candidate will be appointed at
