-----------------------------------------
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
-----------------------------------------
Plenty of hard problems in a wide range of areas including engineering
design, telecommunications, logistics, biology, etc., have been
modeled and tackled successfully with optimization approaches. These
approaches fall into two major categories: meta-heuristics
(evolutionary algorithms, particle swarm, ant or bee colonies,
simulated annealing, Tabu search, etc.) and exact methods
(Branch-and-X, dynamic programming, etc.).

Nowadays, optimization problems become increasingly large and complex,
forcing the use of parallel computing for their efficient and
effective resolution. On the other hand, multi and many-core computing
(e.g. GPU, FPGA) has recently undergone a significant evolution with
the emergence of new high performance computing environments. Indeed,
multi and many-core computing are provided in laptops, high
performance workstations, clusters, grids, and clouds.

The design and implementation of parallel optimization methods raise
several issues related to the characteristics of these methods and
those of the new hardware execution environments at the same time.
This workshop seeks to provide an opportunity for the researchers to
present their original contributions on the joint use of advanced
(discrete or continuous, single or multi-objective, static or dynamic,
deterministic or stochastic, hybrid) optimization methods and
distributed and/or parallel multi/many-core computing, and any related
issues.

-----------------------------------------
The POMM Workshop topics of interest include (but are not limited to)
the following:
-----------------------------------------
- Parallel models for optimization methods.
- Parallel mechanisms for hybridization of optimization methods.
- Redesign of parallel real or simulation-based optimization algorithms.
- Implementation issues of parallel optimization algorithms.
- Parallel-aware frameworks for parallel optimization techniques.
- Computational studies reporting results for hard and challenging
optimization problems.
- Issues and novel approaches and experiments in parallel solving
real-world applications.
- Theory and performance metrics for parallel optimization.

-----------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SUBMISSION
-----------------------------------------
You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on
above and other topics related to Parallel Computing for Simulation
and Optimization. Submitted papers must not have been published or
simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Submission should include a cover
page with authors' names, affiliation addresses, fax numbers, phone
numbers, and email addresses. Please, indicate clearly the
corresponding author and include up to 6 keywords from the above list
of topics and an abstract of no more than 400 words. The full
manuscript should be at most 8 pages using the two-column IEEE format.
Additional pages will be charged additional fee. Short papers (up to 4
pages), poster papers and posters (please refer to
http://hpcs2014.cisedu.info/home/posters for the posters submission
details) will also be accepted for submission. In case of multiple
authors, an indication of which author is responsible for
correspondence must be indicated. Please include page numbers on all
submissions to make it easier for reviewers to provide helpful
comments.

Submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript to the Workshop submission
site at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pomm2014.
Acknowledgement will be sent within 48 hours of submission.

Only PDF files will be accepted. Each paper will receive a minimum of
three reviews. Papers will be selected based on their originality,
relevance, contributions, technical clarity and presentation.
Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to
register and present the paper, if accepted. Authors of accepted
papers must guarantee that their papers will be registered and
presented at the workshop.

-----------------------------------------
Proceedings
-----------------------------------------
Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.
Instructions for final manuscript format and requirements will be
posted on the HPCS 2014 web site. It is our intent to have the
proceedings formally published in hard and soft copies and be
available at the time of the conference. The proceedings are to be
published as ISBN proceedings by the IEEE and will be available online
through IEEE Digital Library and indexed by major indexing services
accordingly (e.g., EI indexing).

If you have any questions about paper submission or the workshop,
please feel free to contact the workshop organizers.

Dear all,

Technical University of Madrid offers a Ph.D. studentship for 3 years in
the context of the FP7 ONTIC project.

-----------------------------
TITLE
-----------------------------
Online Network Traffic Classification

-----------------------------
KEYWORDS
-----------------------------
Big Data Analytics, Scalability, Network Traffic Classification, Data
Stream Mining, Machine Learning

-----------------------------
RESEARCH DESCRIPTION
-----------------------------
The research will be conducted at the Technical University of Madrid,
within the Internet Next Generation Research Group at E.T.S. Sistemas
Informaticos and funded by the ONTIC European Project (FP7).

Accurate identification and categorization of network traffic according
to application type is an important element of many network management
and engineering tasks related with QoS, capacity planning and detection
of network attacks.

Terabytes of data may be transferred through the core network of a
typical ISP every day. Moreover, it is expected an exponential growth of
more than 50 billions of connected devices to Internet. Therefore, this
scenario hampers network data capture and analysis.

ONTIC (Online Network TraffIc Characterization) project investigates:

1)
A novel architecture of scalable mechanisms and techniques to be
able to a) characterize online network traffic data streams, identifying
traffic patterns evolution, and b) proactively detecting anomalies in
real time when hundreds of thousands of packets per second are
processed.

2)
A completely new set of scalable offline data mining mechanisms and
techniques to characterize network traffic, applying a Big Data
analytics approach and using distributed computation paradigms in the
cloud on extremely large network traffic summary datasets consisting on
trillions of records.

Under the context of the project, the proposed Ph.D. project aims at
investigating and proposing a new set of online and offline algorithms
and machine learning techniques to build autonomous network traffic
characterization systems while tackling scalability and real time
network traffic issues in a Big Data analytics scenario.

for Real-time and Healthcare Applications (RA-WERHA 2014)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be held in conjunction with The 39th IEEE Conference on Local
Computer Networks (LCN),
Sep. 8-11, 2014, Edmonton, Canada
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCOPE

The recent advances in wireless sensing technology have led to the
emergence of a wide
range of applications in different domains such as medical, sports,
consumer electronics,
social networking, and enterprise usage. E-health is recognized as the
most important and
promising among these applications for its potential for health
monitoring of chronic
illnesses, lifesaving in emergency situations, and its ability to
provide round the clock
healthcare to rural and disadvantaged areas. Wireless Body Area Networks
(WBANs) are the
key enabler of remote and in-hospital health monitoring and are expected
to revolutionize
the health and real-time body monitoring industry.

WBAN technology has quickly attracted a lot of attention from
researchers, practitioners
and clinicians as well as mobile health related data managers. The main
objective of WBAN
is to provide cost-effective, flexible, and secure use of biotelemetry
information and
communication technologies to support both medical and non-medical
applications. This
technology enables ambient assisted living by providing more freedom to
the elderly,
disabled, and chronic illness sufferers. Moreover, it can be rapidly
deployed in emergency
and disaster situations facilitating faster and more accurate remote
diagnosis of victims.
WBAN technology unleashes the possibilities and potentials for
personalized medicine which
promises to revolutionize healthcare that will have a significant
societal and economic
impact and improve the citizens? quality of life, particularly in future
smart cities.
However, WBAN applications present several challenges for the research
community including:
passive non-intrusive and power utilisation design issues, security and
reliability with
regards to the integrity of the acquired biotelemetry data and the
real-time transmission
of the monitored data using QoS aware techniques. Moreover, new emerging
applications,
which consider critical flows, are gaining more and more popularity in
various activity domains.

This workshop seeks to bring together leading academic and industrial
researchers,
practitioners, and clinicians to identify and discuss the major
technical challenges
and recent results related to WBANs based medical and non-medical
applications.
All are welcome to present and share their latest research findings,
ideas, simulation
tools and prototype test-beds at the 2014 RA-WERHA workshop.

A cross-faculty PhD studentship is available at University of Strathclyde (Departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Management Science), funded through the Capita/University of Strathclyde Strategic Partnership.

PROJECT TITLE: Network Science, Optimization and Data Fusion in a Smart City
START DATE: Oct 2014

CO-SUPERVISORS
Kerem Akartunali (Management Science) kerem.akartunali@strath.ac.uk
Des Higham (Mathematics & Statistics) d.j.higham@strath.ac.uk

ELIGIBILITY
Sufficient funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees for a UK/EU student only, plus a standard stipend. This PhD project requires a highly numerate graduate with skills and interests in computational science.

TOPICS AND AIM OF THE PROJECT
There is a compelling case for training graduates in the mathematical sciences to play a leading role in data-rich applications. Going beyond the fundamental issues of storing, sharing, curating and securing data, mathematicians and operational researchers develop models and algorithms that deliver actionable insights.

This project will drive a new collaboration across the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science, by combining mathematical ideas from three very active, hot-topic areas
. Network Science: studying not only the individual elements in a system, but also the complex, emergent behaviour that arises when these elements combine,
. Optimization: developing computational strategies for discovering optimal solutions to quantifiable problems, notably on very large data sets, where High Performance Computing is necessary,
. Data Fusion: where heterogeneous sources of data are combined in order to add value, with the relative "influence" and "distinctness" of each data set simultaneously quantified.

The project will be application-driven, with close involvement of Strathclyde's new Institute for Future Cities (http://www.strath.ac.uk/business/cities/). The Institute is designed to work in partnership - integrating and catalysing expertise and research from multiple disciplines within Strathclyde and other academic, government and commercial organisations.

The project will meet the Institute's aim to tackle the large, complex and difficult issues and opportunities for cities. In order to maximise impact, the precise details will be fleshed out in collaboration with the key data generators and users; notably Glasgow City Council, who administer the ?24 Million TSB-funded Smart City Demonstrator award, which is at the heart of the City Observatory, to be housed in Strathclyde's Technology and Innovation Centre. The essence of this project is to develop new, customized Big Data and High Performance Computing algorithms that can be stress-tested and validated on data from the Observatory. A typical case study for the algorithms would be in combining data sources from the observatory sensors to monitor and predict energy levels across the city, including the new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems, with a view to allowing energy storage when demand is low for use during times of higher activity. This has the potential to cut peo!
ple's fuel bills, help the city in its fight against fuel poverty and give Glaswegians access to affordable warmth.

HOW TO APPLY
All applications are to be made online at http://pgr.strath.ac.uk/. All documents (including scans of original documents) can be uploaded during the online application process. Candidates are expected to submit a cover letter, a research proposal detailing their 3-year plan, CV, any university degree certificates and transcripts, English test results (if applicable), two recommendation letters (or contact details of two referees, if letters are not available to them), and any other supporting documents. In order to be considered for this studentship, candidates should specifically note the title of this project in their online application when prompted about funding and their source of finance.

Organized by ACM SIGEVO http://www.sigevo.org/gecco-2014/

PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March 28th, 2014

Workshop URL:
http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/~jsw/metaheuristic-design-patterns/MDPWorkshop2014.htm
----------------------------------------------------------

You've (presumably) received this email because you're interested in EC
and/or metaheuristics in general:

* Do you have an idea about how metaheuristics could be better
hybridized or generated?
* Have you observed some commonality (e.g. across frameworks or
methodologies) that is not yet widely recognized?
* Are you frustrated when researchers don?t follow best practices that
are well-understood in your field?

If so, then you should attend MetaDeeP 2014 ? the first Workshop on
Metaheuristic Design Patterns.

----------------------------------------------------------
Why Design Patterns?
----------------------------------------------------------

Over the last 20 years, Evolutionary Computation (and meta- and hyper-
heuristics in general) has flourished, spawning an enormous variety of
algorithms, operators and representations. The history of science and
mathematics demonstrates that such proliferation is inevitable in a
growing field, but that in order to progress non-incrementally it is
periodically necessary to obtain a unifying perspective.

Existing EC/metaheuristic frameworks provide a certain level of
abstraction, but these are not generally sufficient to capture
higher-level or cross-cutting concerns such as the automatic design of
metaheuristics "in the large" (c.f. Dijkstra on software componentization).

The "Design Patterns" revolution in 1994 was successful in addressing
analogous issues in the software industry. The default level of
discourse among practitioners was consequently significantly increased,
and today ?factory method? or ?chain of responsibility? are software
engineers? lingua franca, immensely facilitating communication and
design of software systems.

The workshop organizers strongly believe that the EC/metaheuristics
community needs and deserves a corresponding breakthrough. The domain of
metaheuristics has good mathematical and conceptual foundations, so
nothing precludes the creation of a coherent and useful set of concepts
to help move metaheuristics up an abstraction level. For instance,
hyper-heuristics can be considered as the well-known composite pattern
as applied to metaheuristics. Framing recurring methodological and
algorithmic themes in terms of such Metaheuristic Design Patterns (MDP)
has been advocated in a recent lecture [1] and several papers [2,3]?
similar desires have also been expressed elsewhere [4].

This workshop provides a forum for those interested in contributing to
the MDP vision and/or willing to demonstrate its usefulness in practical
and theoretical studies.

----------------------------------------------------------
Topics and Themes
----------------------------------------------------------

The workshop welcomes original submissions on all applications of design
patterns to metaheuristics, which include (but are not limited to) the
following topics and themes:

- Applications of existing design patterns (e.g. from [5]) to
metaheuristics. Some examples are given in [1,4] and on the Workshop
website.
- New metaheuristic design patterns: algorithms and methodologies that
might be expected to be widely applicable but which have not yet been
documented at the appropriate level of abstraction.
- Automation of metaheuristic design via patterns. There is a wealth of
pattern literature in the (Search-Based) Software Engineering community
related to software automation. Much of this is directly applicable to
metaheuristic design.
- Pattern languages for metaheuristics. See [4] for the definitive example.

Further details (and examples) are available at the Workshop website:

2nd Smart Sensor Protocols and Algorithms (SSPA2014)
http://jlloret.webs.upv.es/sspa2014/

in conjunction with The thirteenth International Conference on Ad-Hoc Networks and Wireless (AdHoc Now-2014)
Benidorm, Spain, June 22-27, 2014.
http://www.adhocnow.net/

SCOPE:

Smart Sensor protocols and algorithms make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to establish communication between network devices. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of their actions. The algorithms can make use of the information gathered from the protocol in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with smart protocols and algorithms. Moreover, they could learn from the past and use this knowledge to improve future de!
cisions.

In this workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit papers focused on the design, development, analysis or optimization of smart sensor protocols or algorithms at any communication layer. Algorithms and protocols based on artificial intelligence techniques for network management, network monitoring, quality of service enhancement, performance optimization and network secure are included in the workshop.

Aims & Scope

The HM Workshops are intended to be an international forum for
researchers in the area of design, analysis, and experimental
evaluation of metaheuristics. Metaheuristics, such as simulated
annealing, evolutionary algorithms, tabu search, ant colony
optimization, scatter search and iterated local search, are
considered state-of-the-art methods for many problems. In
recent years, however, it has become evident that the
concentration on a sole metaheuristic is rather restrictive. A
skilled combination of concepts from different optimization
techniques can provide a more efficient behavior and a higher
flexibility when dealing with real-world and large-scale
problems.

Hybrid Metaheuristics are such techniques for optimization that
combine different metaheuristics or integrate AI/OR techniques
into metaheuristics. Previously organized Workshops were held
in Ischia Island (HM 2013), Vienna (HM 2010), Udine (HM 2009),
Malaga (HM 2008), Dortmund (HM 2007), Gran Canaria (HM 2006),
Barcelona (HM 2005), and Val?ncia (HM 2004).

HM2014 is organized as a non-profit event.

************************************************************************

Topics of Interest

Contributions solicited cover a variety of topics including but
not limited to:

- Novel combinations of components from different metaheuristics
- Hybridization of metaheuristics and AI/OR techniques
- Low-level hybridization
- High-level hybridization, portfolio techniques, expert systems
- Cooperative search
- Automated parameter tuning
- Empirical and statistical comparison
- Theoretical aspects of hybridization
- Parallelization
- Software libraries

************************************************************************

Paper Submission

Authors are invited to submit a full paper describing original,
unpublished research with at most 15 pages (in LNCS style).
Proofs omitted due to space constraints must be put into an
appendix to be read by the program committee members at their
discretion.

Electronic submissions should be formatted in pdf. Simultaneous
submission to other conferences or workshops with published
proceedings is not allowed.

The proceedings will be published in Springer's LNCS series.

A fully funded 3 year PhD studentship is available at the School of
Informatics, University of Edinburgh, on the topic of "Design and Analysis
of Satisfiability Algorithms". The studentship is funded by the ERC
Consolidator Grant ALUnif: "Algorithms and Lower Bounds: A Unified
Approach", and will be supervised by Rahul Santhanam.

The goal of the project is to design and analyze better algorithms for
Satisfiability and other NP-complete algorithms, guided by
complexity-theoretic ideas. The project belongs to the field of exact
algorithms for NP-hard problems, where we are interested in finding
algorithms for NP-hard problems with worst-case complexity O(2^{cn}),
where c < 1 is as small as possible. Here "n" is the witness size of the
instance. Recently discovered connections between complexity lower bound
techniques and algorithmic analysis suggest new approaches to finding
better exact algorithms, and the student will work with the supervisor in
exploring these new approaches.

The student will join the Algorithms and Complexity Group at the
Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science (LFCS) in the School of
Informatics. The School of Informatics at Edinburgh is the UK's largest
and strongest research centre for computing and informatics. In the latest
UK Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, Informatics at Edinburgh was
adjudged to deliver more world-leading research than any other university
in the UK. Two winners of the ACM Turing award, which is the highest
distinction in computer science, have taught at Edinburgh.

Applicants should have a strong mathematical background, with an
undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related area.
Prior experience with the theory of algorithms and/or
complexity theory is highly recommended.

The position is available to UK/EU applicants, but exceptional
international applicants may also be considered. The deadline is March
31. Informal queries may be addressed to Rahul Santhanam
(rsanthan@inf.ed.ac.uk).
