MATCH-UP 2015: the Third International Workshop on Matching Under Preferences

16-18 April 2015
University of Glasgow, UK
http://www.optimalmatching.com/MATCHUP2015

MATCH-UP 2015 is the third workshop in the series of interdisciplinary and
international workshops on matching under preferences. The first in the
series took place in Reykjavik in 2008, whilst the second took place in
Budapest in 2012.

*** The full programme has now been published ***
*** The early registration deadline is 12 March ***
*** We are still accepting submissions for the poster session ***

Background
----------
Matching problems with preferences occur in widespread applications such
as the assignment of school-leavers to universities, junior doctors to
hospitals, students to campus housing, children to schools, kidney
transplant patients to donors and so on. The common thread is that
individuals have preference lists over the possible outcomes and the task
is to find a matching of the participants that is in some sense optimal
with respect to these preferences.

The remit of this workshop is to explore matching problems with
preferences from the perspective of algorithms and complexity, discrete
mathematics, combinatorial optimization, game theory, mechanism design
and economics, and thus a key objective is to bring together the research
communities of the related areas.

List of topics
--------------
The matching problems under consideration include, but are not limited to:

* two-sided matchings involving agents on both sides (e.g. college
admissions, resident allocation, job markets, school choice, etc.)
* two-sided matchings involving agents and items (e.g. house allocation,
course allocation, project allocation, assigning papers to reviewers,
school choice, etc.)
* one-sided matchings (roommates problem, kidney exchanges, etc.)
* matching with payments (assignment game, etc.)

Invited speakers
----------------
* Katarina Cechlarova, Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice
* Christine Cheng, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
* Herve Moulin, University of Glasgow

Programme
---------
See http://www.optimalmatching.com/MATCHUP2015/program.html.

Registration
------------
Registration for MATCH-UP 2015 is now open. Registration covers entrance
to the technical sessions, workshop proceedings, coffee breaks, lunches
on Thursday 16 April, Friday 17 April and Saturday 18 April, and the
workshop dinner on Friday 17 April. The early bird registration fees
are ?275 for full fee and ?200 for students, and the early registration
deadline is 12 March 2015. To register, follow this link:
http://www.optimalmatching.com/MATCHUP2015/registration.html.

Poster session
--------------
We are running a poster session at the workshop from 1800-1930 on Thursday
16 April. We are seeking titles and short abstracts of posters to be
presented at this session. Poster abstracts will not be reviewed; we will
simply determine whether they are relevant to the workshop. Relevant
abstracts will be accepted on a first-come first-served until our capacity
is reached. Instructions for submitting poster abstracts can be found here:
http://www.optimalmatching.com/MATCHUP2015/submissions.html. We will
continue to accept poster submissions until shortly before the workshop
(capacity permitting), but in order for abstracts to appear in the workshop
proceedings, they must be received by Monday 2 March.

we solicit high-quality original papers presenting work that advances
the state-of-the-art in clusters and closely related fields. All
papers will be rigorously peer-reviewed for their originality,
technical depth and correctness, potential impact, relevance to the

of Informatics, University of Edinburgh. The position is funded by the ERC
Consolidator Grant ALUnif (Algorithms and Lower Bounds: A Unified
Approach), held by Rahul Santhanam.

The goal of the project is to use recently discovered connections between
complexity lower bound techniques and algorithmic design and analysis to
design new and improved algorithms for SAT and other NP-complete problems,
as well as to prove new complexity lower bounds.

Candidates should have a strong background in theoretical computer
science, preferably in complexity theory and/or exact algorithms for
NP-hard problems. Candidates should also have a PhD, or be close to
completion of a PhD.

For its Aviation Academy the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences/Hogeschool van Amsterdam (AUAS/HvA) is looking for an experienced and expert:

Lecturer in Simulation and Operations Research for capacity in the Aviation Sector (0.8 ? 1.0 fte)

==================

The position

The optimum deployment of an aircraft during its entire life cycle is central to the Aviation degree programme curriculum. The three primary themes during this programme are Engineering, Operations and Business. Students learn to approach issues on the basis of the four perspectives of Airport, Airline, Government and Suppliers. As a lecturer at the Aviation Academy you will be responsible for course development and course delivery in the area of Airport Capacity. Teaching activities will be in the use of Simulation and Optimisation techniques for the modelling and simulation of Capacity problems in the aviation industry. For course development and course delivery you will take into account the relationship with other elements of the curriculum.

You will be able to supervise students during the course, in course didactics. You will identify relevant developments in your domain and your field of work and translate these, together with the senior lecturer/researcher and colleagues, into educational programmes and curriculum development within the degree programme.

The Aviation Academy has a comprehensive relation and knowledge network within the aviation sector in the Netherlands and abroad, consisting of companies, government institutions and educational establishments. In the context of research responsibilities you will be maintaining and expanding this network.

==================

What we are looking for

We are looking for a MSc-level candidate with experience in operations research and knowledge in Discrete-event Simulation and Optimisation. Furthermore the candidate we are looking for must have knowledge of programs such Arena, Simul8, Simio or similar for simulation, linear programming and a programming language. You also have experience with Solver, Excel and Lingo or a similar program for mathematical programming. Experience in the aviation sector is not a requirement but it will be a plus for your application. You have a genuine interest in the operative problems of the aviation industry through the use of simulation and operations research techniques. You also have excellent verbal and written skills in English. Preferably Your MSc. thesis was related to research on the subject of simulation and operations research.

==================

The department/programme

The Aviation Academy was created to serve the European aviation industry. Our mission is to provide the current and next generation of professionals with the skills they need to meet the international aviation challenges of the next 10 to 15 years. Our three main activities are Education, Practical Research and Peer Networking. The Aviation Academy offers Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Aviation in two variants: Aviation Engineering and Aviation Operations. The Aviation Academy performs practical scientific research around real-world problems in the aviation sector, with the goal of improving and innovating professional practice.

Within the Bachelor of Engineering educational programme we are currently putting together an Aviation Development specialisation, with a focus on the longer-term/long-term developments in the aviation sector, such as airport master planning, airspace developments, influence of new business models and the use of aircraft by airlines and/or adaptations to regulations and social frameworks. Students are trained to become aviation generalists and would eventually seek employment with companies in the aviation sector, but also the consultancy sector or the government.

Within the Aviation Academy the Aviation research programme, in conjunction with the aviation sector, conducts applied research into the optimal development and utilisation of the capacity in the aviation sector. The results of this research will benefit companies in the sector and will be used to enhance the educational programme.

==================

What we offer

Your work will form part of the Lecturer 3 appointment group. This post is a salary grade 10 post (Collective Labour Agreement for the Higher Professional Education sector). The maximum salary is ? 3800,- gross per month for a fulltime appointment and is dependent on qualifications and experience. The post will initially involve a temporary appointment for one year and extension will be dependent on demonstrated suitability for the post and the possibilities for creating a permanent position. The AUAS/HvA has a comprehensive package of benefits, including a generous holiday arrangement and a 13th month. In addition the AUAS/HvA (via the AUAS/HvA Academy) offers excellent study and development opportunities and encourages staff to continue their ongoing professionalization.
