Summer School on Lower Bounds 2015

The program of the school will consist of three tutorial series related to
lower bounds. The late Monday afternoon is devoted to presentations of own
research by some of the junior participants of the workshop. We expect the
talks to include a fair amount of technical details. The workshop will also
include plenty of time for discussions.

Tutorial speakers

Kristoffer Arnsfelt Hansen (Aarhus U.): Boolean circuits and polynomials
Arkadev Chattopadhyay (TIFR, Mumbai): Multiparty Communication Complexity
Ryan Williams (Stanford U.): Algorithms as Lower Bounds

Date and location

Date: June 28 - July 1, 2015, lectures start on Sunday morning and end by
Wednesday morning session
Location: Horomerice (near Prague, Czech Republic)

Organizers (contact person): Michal Koucky (Charles University).

Participation

A limited amount of funding is available to support junior participans of the
school. Interested graduate students and postdocs are invited to apply to
attend the school by April 15, 2015. They should send their name, affiliation,
status (student/postdoc) by email to koucky@iuuk.mff.cuni.cz and arrange with
their supervisor to send a supporting letter to the above address. Questions
should be directed to the same address.

NoSQL-Net 2015: 2nd International Workshop on NoSQL Databases, Emerging
Database Technologies and Applications

in conjunction with DEXA 2015
Valencia, Spain, September 1 - 4, 2015

http://www.ksi.mff.cuni.cz/NoSQL-Net2015/

Motivation:

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) have been the predominant
database systems over the last decades; they are established and mature
systems with a declarative standard language SQL that offers complex
operations (like joins) and their tabular data format is simple, strong,
widely used and easy-to-understand. However, recent developments in
distributed storage systems and large amount of data, so-called "Big
Data", have revealed some inherent weaknesses of the relational model.

The new research challenges, that will be addressed in this workshop, are
related to:

- the emerging methods and techniques leveraged in NoSQL databases, - the
alternative technologies for solving different Big Data
workload?related problems,
- the emerging database technologies and applications (mobile databases,
multimedia databases, geographical information systems, biological /
bioinformatics databases, sensor data management),
- the NoSQL advantages in Social networking and Semantic Web applications,
- the emerging pan-European data infrastructure that will enable
interoperability, interlinking and reuse of open data in public and also
commercial services, and
- the need for enhanced security in the forthcoming business models
(e-government, e-commerce).

Areas of interests include, but are not limited to:

- Advances in NoSQL databases (key/value, columnar, document)
- Advances in Graph databases
- Advances in In-Memory data management
- NewSQL databases
- Map/Reduce framework and its exploitation
- Security mechanisms for Emerging database systems
- Schema design and schema evolution for Emerging databases
- Efficient and effective processing and management of Big Data
- Interoperability between different knowledge organization schemas -
Semantic Web technologies (platforms/frameworks/services)
- Open Data standards and applications (e.g., e-Government, e-Environment,
or e-Health)
- Quality and trustworthiness of Open Data
- Scenario-based analysis, studies, practical experiences and applications
and also work in progress solutions based on public datasets and
crowdsourced geospatial data (e.g. DBpedia, OpenStreetMap, GeoNames) -
Sensor data management, Internet of Thing applications (smart cities,
smart environment, smart metering, industrial control, etc)

Important Dates:

- Submission of Full Papers: March 31, 2015
- Notification of Acceptance: April 30, 2015
- Camera-Ready Version Due: May 25, 2015
- Conference date: September 1-4, 2015
- Workshop date: to be specified (probably September 1/2)

- Lena Wiese, Knowledge Engineering Research Group, Georg-August
Universitaet Goettingen, Germany
- Valentina Janev, Institute Mihajlo Pupin, University of Belgrade,
Republic of Serbia
- Irena Holubova, Department of Software Engineering, Charles University

Neural computation and artificial neural networks have seen an explosion of
interest over the last few years, and are being successfully applied across
an extraordinary range of problem domains, in areas as diverse as finance,
medicine, engineering, geology and physics, in problems of complex dynamics
and complex behavior prediction, classification or control. Several
architectures, learning strategies and algorithms have been introduced in
this highly dynamic field in the last couple of decades. This conference
intends to be a major forum for scientists, engineers and practitioners
interested in the study, analysis, design, modeling and implementation of
neural computing systems, both theoretically and in a broad range of
application fields.

The Journal of Computational Geometry (jocg.org) is seeking a third
Managing Editor whose role will be to act as the journal's whip.

This editor's main responsibility will be to oversee the journal's
review process and ensure that all parties---editors, reviewers, and
authors---perform their duties in a timely manner.

This position requires excellent organizational skills and is not for
the timid: It involves sending frequent reminders to authors,
reviewers, and editors, and occasionally reassigning duties.

This is a volunteer position. The compensation consists entirely of a
place on the journal's masthead and the respect of the community.

Anyone interested in the position should contact the current managing
editors by April 15, 2015:

Joachim Gudmundsson - joachim.gudmundsson@sydney.edu.au
Pat Morin - morin@scs.carleton.ca

We will select an applicant (if any) as the new Managing Editor by
April 30, 2015.
