JOB OPENING IN COMPUTATIONAL LINEAR PROGRAMMING
The research group Mathematical Optimization Methods at Zuse Institute
Berlin is looking for a researcher working on computational aspects of
linear programming. Our group holds longstanding expertise in the
design and implementation of mathematical optimization solvers and the
successful candidate will be part of the development team of the SCIP
Optimization Suite (http://scip.zib.de/).
Depending on the background and interest of the candidate, possible
topics range from designing parallel algorithms for solving large-scale
linear programs from energy applications to more technical improvements
at the core of a simplex solver. Good knowledge of German is a plus,
because it allows interaction with our project partners, but it is not a
must.
Depending on the qualifications of the candidate the tasks will be
suitable for a PhD or PostDoc level researcher. Salary will be at
Berlin TV-L 13/14 depending on the qualification of the candidate.

Our profile:
The Research Group Advanced Analytics is part of the Operations Research &
Management Research Area at the School of Business and Economics of RWTH
Aachen University. We combine methods of data analytics and simulation with
optimization and heuristics to consider planning problems under uncertainty
and complexity. Our research is quantitative, design-oriented and focuses
on various industries: In several industry- and DFG-sponsored projects, we
consider not just planning challenges in transport and logistics, but also
health care and education.
Your profile:
We are looking for applicants with an excellent doctoral degree in business
information systems engineering, computer science, operations research, or
an related field. In your studies, you should have acquired in-depth
expertise in some of the following areas: data mining and statistics,
mathematical optimization, meta-heuristics, object-oriented programming,
and agent-based simulation.
You should be fluent in English (spoken and written), fluency in German is
not required. We look for a researcher who loves combining theoretical with
practical implications, is intrinsically motivated to tackle groundbreaking
work, has a creative mind and truly enjoys working in a team.

Your duties:
The position is part of a DFG-sponsored research project on the validation
and calibration of complex simulations for business decision support. In
both research and practice, such simulations are increasingly employed to
design and evaluate alternative planning strategies. Examples are
simulations of customer-choice for revenue management, patient behaviour
modelled for health care analytics, and or family's school choice when
supporting education planning.
Without calibration and validation, complex simulations are toys, but not
tools capable of supporting decisions. However, a growing number of model
parameters and interdependencies brings growing challenges regarding the
parameterization of simulation models. Manual calibration becomes all but
impossible; the results can hardly be expected to stand up to rigorous
validation. Therefore, new calibration approaches based on methods of
intelligent data analytics and meta-heuristics are called for.
You will work closely with one doctoral researcher and student assistants;
your project interfaces with multiple research undertakings both within our
research group and beyond. As a member of our research group we also expect
you to contribute from an operational and an organizational perspective.
You are expected to contribute both to funding proposals and to
internationally acknowledged publications.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and 3 years.
This is a full-time position. It is also available as part-time employment
per request.
