PhD position in Hamburg, Germany

The Institute of Medical Technology at Hamburg University of Technology
has one research focus on medical robotics. Particularly, we are
interested in multi-criteria optimization and machine learning methods for
treatment planning in robotic radiosurgery.

Currently, we have an open position for a PhD candidate to study the
integration of a second robot holding an ultrasound probe into the
planning problem. Given the number of possible beam and ultrasound pose
combinations we study efficient heuristics and machine learning approaches
to identify the patient specific trade-offs quickly.

The successful applicant holds a Master's degree in computer science,
mathematics, or similar fields and ideally has a solid background in
linear programming, heuristic search and machine learning methods.
Excellent programming skills (Java / C++) and fluency in English are
prerequisites; experience in publishing papers is a plus.

Please, find the official job posting at
https://intranet.tuhh.de/aktuell/stellen/stelle.html?kenn_nr=D-16-76 and
feel free to contact me for more information. Note that the application
deadline is May 28th 2016.

The Call for Papers for the Meeting on Analytic Algorithmics and
Combinatorics (ANALCO17) is available here:

http://www.siam.org/meetings/analco17/

ANALCO17 will occur January 16-17, 2017, in Barcelona, Spain.
This is the first time that ANALCO has taken place in Europe.

ANALCO occurs as a session within the SODA meeting.

The deadline for submissions is July 13, 2016.

Submissions can be uploaded to EasyChair:

https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=analco17

Please feel welcome to share this information broadly.

The aim of ANALCO is to provide a forum for the presentation of original
research in the analysis of algorithms and associated combinatorial
structures. We invite both papers that study properties of fundamental
combinatorial structures that arise in practical computational
applications (such as permutations, trees, strings, tries, and graphs)
and papers that address the precise analysis of algorithms for
processing such structures, including: average-case analysis; analysis
of moments, extrema, and distributions; probabilistic analysis of
randomized algorithms, and so on. Submissions that present significant
new information about classic algorithms are welcome, as are new
analyses of new algorithms that present unique analytic challenges. We
also invite submissions that address tools and techniques for the
analysis of algorithms and combinatorial structures, both mathematical
and computational.

The scientific program will include invited talks, contributed research
papers, and ample time for discussion and debate of topics in this area.
ANALCO will be held during the ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms
(SODA17). ANALCO is also co-located with Algorithm Engineering and
Experimentation (ALENEX17). Since researchers in both fields are
approaching the problem of learning detailed information about the
performance of particular algorithms, we expect that interesting
synergies will develop.

ANALCO is supported by SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics).

Best wishes,
Conrado Martínez and Mark Daniel Ward

About the Conference

Real-Time Computing covers a broad spectrum of the intensively
developing area of low-latency priority-driven system responsiveness
under certain time constrains to essential and decisive human-computer
interactions with constantly incoming data stream. Research on real-time
intelligent systems is of a multi-disciplinary nature, exploiting
concepts from the areas as diverse as signal processing technologies,
computational intelligence, location systems, data processing, digital
document processing and embedded system design. To accomplish its
real-time performance, systematic analysis is carried out when the
systems are working.

Therefore, over the last few years real-time intelligent computing has
radically transformed human life style. In the today's competitive and
highly dynamic environment, analyzing data in real time is a must to
understand in detail how the systems are processing the data and to
reason the outputs and anticipate the trends in intelligent computing,
has become critical.

To leverage the full potential of the opportunity build complex real
time systems, intense research is required and this conference will
serve as one such platform to manifest the ongoing research in the real
time intelligence system.

International Workshop on Exploring Old Maps (EOM 2016)

DESCRIPTION
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Many libraries own an extensive collection of historical maps. Beside
their value
as historical objects, these maps are an important source of information
for
researchers in various scientific disciplines. This ranges from the
actual history
of cartography and general history to the geographic and social
sciences. With
the progressing digitisation of libraries and archives, these maps
become more
easily available to a larger public. A basic level of digitisation
consists of
scanned bitmap images, tagged with some basic bibliographic information
such as
title, author and year of production. In order to make the maps more
accessible,
further metadata describing the contained information is desirable. This
would
enable more user-friendly interfaces, relevant queries of a database, and
automatic analyses.

The purpose is to provide a forum for the communication of results
(which may
appear elsewhere) that may be useful to the community. Researchers and
practitioners
of all areas working on unlocking the content of old maps are welcome to
participate.
We welcome humanities scholars, developers, computer and information
scientists as
well as librarians, archivists and curators.
