Call for Papers - Annals of Operations Research

Special Issue

Recent Advances in Decomposition Methods
for Hard Optimization Problems
***********************************************************

Motivation

Divide and conquer, from Latin divide et impera, is one of the key
techniques for tackling combinatorial optimization problems. It relies on
the idea of decomposing complex problems into a sequence of subproblems
that are then easier to handle. Decomposition techniques (such as
Dantzig-Wolfe, Lagrangian, or Benders decomposition) are extremely
effective in a wide range of applications, including cutting & packing,
production & scheduling, routing & logistics, telecommunications,
transportation and many others. Moreover, decomposition techniques are
playing an important role in many different fields of mixed-integer linear
and non-linear optimization, multi objective optimization, optimization
under uncertainty, bilevel optimization, etc. Despite the tremendous amount
of research on these topics, the mathematical optimization community is
constantly faced with new challenges coming from theoretical aspects and
real world applications that require the development of new advanced tools.

This special issue will be a point of reference for researchers and
practitioners that want to learn more about the recent advances in
decomposition techniques for hard combinatorial optimization problems. We
solicit original and high-quality papers presenting the latest improvements
in the field.

Topics

The purpose of this issue is to provide a view on state of the art
decomposition methods in the field of mathematical optimization. We will
consider high-quality manuscripts addressing the development of new
theoretical insights, algorithmic approaches and computational studies in
the context of exact and heuristic methods based on decomposition
techniques.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

- Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition
- Stabilization techniques
- Row and column generation
- Column generation
- Branch-and-price
- Branch-and-cut-and-price
- Branch-and-cut
- Benders decomposition
- L-shaped method
- Generalized Benders decomposition
- Lagrangian decomposition
- Cross decomposition
- Decomposition for non-linear programming
- Decomposition for robust and stochastic combinatorial optimization
- Heuristic methods derived from exact methods based on decomposition
- Applications to challenging real world problems involving some of the
above techniques

We strongly encourage participants of the EURO 2016 conference to submit
full versions of their presented papers to this special issue. This Call
for Papers is also open to the entire community of academics and
practitioners working in the field of mathematical optimization.

It is with deep regret that we have learned of the sudden death of our colleague Leo Kroon.

Leo G. Kroon worked as a Professor of Quantitative Logistics at our School and as a Logistics Consultant in the Department of Process Quality and Innovation at Netherlands Railways (NS).

During his long-standing career of more than 32 years at RSM, he served in many positions and roles: as scientific researcher, assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor, ERIM Member and ERIM Fellow, supervisor to many master students and PhD candidates, and as chairman of the Examination Board.

Leo was instrumental in building a world-class research group on decision support tools for the planning and real-time operations control of public transport systems. He taught applied mathematics to the first year bachelor students, and quantitative logistics to bachelor and master students, and PhD candidates.

He was a member of the NS team that won the prestigious INFORMS Edelman Award 2008 for its model-based contributions to the development of the 2007 NS timetable. He was the recipient of the 2008 ERIM Impact Award and he received the Umbra Erasmi.

We will remember Leo as a brilliant and erudite colleague who was committed to his students, PhD candidates, and colleagues he worked with. He was honest, humble, and gifted with a subtle sense of humour.

Our thoughts are with his partner Cisca.

In the attached card, you will find details about the funeral, scheduled on Wednesday 21 September at 2:00 P.M. in Zoetermeer. Also, you are invited to express your condolences on www.memori.nl/gedenkplaats/leo-g-kroon/<http://www.memori.nl/gedenkplaats/leo-g-kroon/>

=====================================================================

Workshop Description and Motivation:

The availability of advanced sensing and communication infrastructures,
electric monitoring facilities, computational intelligence, widespread
use and interest in renewable energy sources, and customer-driven
electricity usage, storage and generation capabilities, have posed the
foundations for a robust and dynamic next generation economic interplay
between the demand-side: smart buildings, and the supply-side: smart power
grids. Three key aspects distinguish this evolving economy from more
traditional market forces:
(1) Information: both energy producers and consumers have access to
information (e.g., production costs, customers' electricity needs,
time distribution of demands);
(2) Exchange: communication is possible on a continuous basis, thus
enabling both individual as well as group decision processes
(e.g., producers and consumers can negotiate prices and energy
exchanges);
(3) energy can be produced not only by power plants, but also by
customers (e.g., via solar panels) and stored for later use
(or redistributed through the electric grid), and
(4) given all of the above, customers can employ advanced tactical
measures for improving building operations and reducing energy
consumption without sacrificing occupant satisfaction, which has
direct economic implications for producers.

In general terms, a smart grid enables the distributed generation and
two-directional flow of electricity and information, within an integrated
system of connected smart buildings as key agents within this new ecosystem.

AI plays a key role in the relationship between the smart grid and smart
buildings. New technologies offer infrastructure that provides information
to support automated decision making on how to (automatically) adapt
production/consumption, optimize costs, waste, and environmental impact,
and provide reliability, safety, security, and efficiency. Indeed, several
research projects have already developed the view of this ecosystem as a
multi-agent system, where agents coordinate and negotiate to achieve smart
grid and smart building objectives.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners
from diverse areas of AI to explore both established and novel applications
of AI techniques to address problems related to the design, implementation,
deployment, and maintenance of both smart buildings and the smart grid –
either as independent topics or together in an overarching multi-agent
system.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
• Distributed decision making and distributed optimization
• Agents and multi-agent applications in smart grids
• Data analytics and machine learning techniques applied to smart buildings,
grids and energy management
• Advanced machine learning techniques used to improve building maintenance
and operations and reduce energy consumption without sacrificing occupant
satisfaction
• Novel information and sensing technologies that can be used to enable the
deployment of advanced machine learning and data mining techniques within
the built environment
• Knowledge-based methods in design of smart buildings and smart grids
• Coordination of intelligent agents in smart grids
• Negotiation and trading strategies in energy markets
• Human-computer interactions and human-in-the-loop systems within smart grids
• Simulations of energy markets and smart grids

Workshop Format:

The workshop is expected to be a full-day event. It will include three
components:
(1) one invited keynote speaker, selected among leading researchers
exploring the advanced use of AI techniques to address practical
issues of smart grids and smart buildings;
(2) a collection of presentations selected from peer-reviewed submissions,
in response to an open call for papers; (3) a closing panel, including
both invited panelist and workshop participants, to discuss future
directions of research in this field.

Submission Guidelines:

Participants should submit a paper (maximum 6 pages + 1 page of references),
describing their work on one or more of the topics relevant to the workshop.
Accepted papers will be presented during the workshop and will be published
as AAAI technical reports, which will be made freely available in AAAI's digital
library.

Authors are requested to prepare their papers using the AAAI style files (http://www.aaai.org/Publications/Templates/AuthorKit.zip).

All submissions are conducted via the following website:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aisgsb2017.
Submissions should include the name(s), affiliations, and email addresses of
all authors in the body of the email. We welcome the submission of papers
rejected from the AAAI 2017 technical program. The deadline for receipt of
submissions is October 21, 2016. Papers received after this date may not be
reviewed.

Submissions will be refereed on the basis of technical quality, novelty,
significance, and clarity. Each submission will be thoroughly reviewed by at
least two program committee members.

For questions about the submission process, contact the workshop co-chairs.

International Journal of Engineering Business Management
Special Collection on Social and Collaborative Networks and their Applications

This Special Collection is devoted to publishing the latest significant research results on Social and Collaborative Networks design, analysis and management. During the last two decades, there has been a remarkable increase in research attention to networks which fostered the domains of applications and gathered research in the exchanging of knowledge on methods and models. Moreover, the increased availability of large databases and big data analysis opportunities have enabled the description of emergent phenomena as well as communities and collaborative patterns between networks' members.

Networks can be considered a valuable representation of many real systems and play an important role in their understanding. They have a flexible definition - set of nodes and links, representing agents and the interactions among them, respectively - which favors the association between theories in different research fields, ranging from social and managerial to technological and infrastructural aspects as well as to communication systems.

Networks ubiquity has led to a set of common and relevant research problems on how structures facilitate or limit their dynamical behaviors. Thus, the analysis of networks' architecture is extremely useful in order to acquire insight regarding the systems they represent.

This Special Collection encourages research that uses empirical and case study approaches to present theories, techniques and practical experiences in networks that may be used in applications of network methodologies. Articles that have a direct connection to real world problems and lead to more extensive use of network science concepts are preferentially welcome.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Social Network Analysis
• Complex networks, quantitative models and their applications
• Community structure and collaboration in networks
• Big data on social and collaborative networks
• Resilience and recovery in networks
• Assortativity and homophily in social network analysis
• Management and networks
• Multilayer networks

Manuscripts submitted to this Special Collection will be peer-reviewed before publication.

Please submit your paper according to the following timetable for the special issue:

SCOPE AND TOPICS

The goal of the International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE) is to integrate theory and practice in the field of performance engineering by providing a forum for sharing ideas and experiences between industry and academia. Nowadays, complex systems of all types, like Web-based systems, data centers and cloud infrastructures, social networks, peer-to-peer, mobile and wireless systems, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, real-time and embedded systems, have increasingly distributed and dynamic system architectures that provide high flexibility, however, also increase the complexity of managing end-to-end application performance.
ICPE brings together researchers and industry practitioners to share and present their experiences, discuss challenges, and report state-of-the-art and in-progress research on performance engineering of software and systems, including performance measurement, modeling, benchmark design, and run-time performance management. The focus is both on classical metrics such as response time, throughput, resource utilization, and (energy) efficiency, as well as on the relationship of such metrics to other system properties including but not limited to scalability, elasticity, availability, reliability, and security.

This year's main theme is cost-effective performance engineering, where cost has a wide interpretation including measures such as effort and energy in addition to traditional performance measures.

A variety of contribution styles for papers are solicited including: basic and applied research papers for novel scientific insights, industrial and experience papers reporting on applying performance engineering or benchmarks in practice, and work-in-progress/vision papers for ongoing but yet interesting work.
Different acceptance criteria apply based on the expected content of the individual contribution types.

Authors will be requested to self-classify their papers according to topic and contribution style when submitting their papers.

Submissions to all tracks need to be uploaded to ICPE's submission system and conform to the ACM submission format. For detailed submission instructions, please visit: https://icpe2017.spec.org/submissions.html.

At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register at the full rate, attend the conference and present the paper. Presented papers will be published in the ICPE 2017 conference proceedings that will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. After the conference, there will be a call for a special issue of a journal.

AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
(For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.)

*** Call for Workshops ***

GECCO workshops provide the possibility to commonly develop visions
and exchange ideas in an informal setting, especially if focused on an
emerging research field or interdisciplinary research area. In
contrast to regular sessions, workshops can (and should) host
interactive sessions (posters, discussions, demonstrations, etc.).
Attendance at the workshops will be free to all GECCO attendees.

Workshop organisers are responsible for coordination and
publicity. They collect and review papers, and provide a list of
accepted papers and their authors, if applicable. If required, the
GECCO organisers may provide additional support to the workshop
organisers, such as publicity. Note that organisers, participants and
presenters must register for the conference. Accepted workshop papers
will be collected by Sheridan/ACM Press, and published in a companion
volume to the conference proceedings.

* Submission Process *

Each workshop proposal needs to include:

1. A half-page extended abstract (in plain text) that includes: the
workshop title, the name and affiliation of the organiser(s), and a
description of scope and content. Please refrain from using special
characters in the title.
2. Short bio of the organiser(s) (about half-page in plain text).
3. [Highly encouraged] A description of any interactive activity or demo
planned within the workshop.
4. A draft schedule of the workshop, including the estimated duration (1
to max 4 sessions) and type of sessions.
5. If this workshop (or a similar event coordinated by the same
organisers or a subset of them) has taken place in previous years,
either at GECCO or at other events, then include URLs to the event
pages.

* Reviewing of Proposals *

Workshop proposals will be reviewed by the GECCO 2017 organising
committee, based on GECCO attendees' likely interest, the breadth and

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Performance modeling of software
* Languages and ontologies
* Methods and tools
* Relationship/integration/tradeoffs with other QoS attributes
* Analytical, simulation and statistical modeling methodologies

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished papers that are not
being considered in another forum. A variety of contribution styles for
papers are solicited including: basic and applied research papers for
novel scientific insights, industrial and experience papers reporting on
applying performance engineering or benchmarks in practice, and
work-in-progress/vision papers for ongoing but yet interesting work.
Different acceptance criteria apply based on the expected content of the
individual contribution types.

Authors will be requested to self-classify their papers according to
topic and contribution style when submitting their papers.

Submissions to all tracks need to be uploaded to ICPE's submission system
and conform to the ACM submission format. For detailed submission
instructions, please visit: https://icpe2017.spec.org/submissions.html.

At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register at
the full rate, attend the conference and present the paper. Presented
papers will be published in the ICPE 2017 conference proceedings that
will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. After
the conference, there will be a call for a special issue of a journal.

AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings
are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks
prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects
the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
(For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital
Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the
first day of the conference.)
