Dear Colleague,

you are kindly invited to submit your contribution to the sessions on "Uncertainty based Optimization in Engineering" within the framework of the 15th EUROPT Workshop on Advances in Continuous Optimization, Montreal, Canada, 12-14 July 2017.

EUROPT website: https://www.gerad.ca/colloques/europt2017/
Special session website: http://utopiae.eu/about/utopiae-training/research/ieee-computational-intelligence-in-aerospace-sciences/ieee-activities/utopiae-activities/

*Important Dates*
Abstract submission deadline: March 15, 2017
Abstract acceptance: March 31, 2017

*Scope and Motivations*
In an expanding world with limited resources and increasing uncertainty, optimization and uncertainty quantification become a necessity. Optimization can turn a problem into a solution, thus the main focus of this session is to promote the knowledge exchange on new approaches to treat uncertainty in complex engineering systems and use novel optimization techniques to efficiently deal with large scale problems with many objectives and uncertain quantities. It is generally recognised, in fact, that neglecting the impact of uncertainty on the design of any system or process can lead to unreliable design solutions.

Common approaches that make use of safety margins to account for uncertainty in design and manufacturing are not adequate to fully capture the growing complexity of engineering systems and provide reliable, resilient and optimal solutions.

*Topics*
The sessions are open to everybody who wants to present recent and original results on any of the following topics:

- Robust Optimization
- Reliability based Design Optimization
- Resilience based Design Optimization
- Evolvable Optimization Under Uncertainty
- Uncertainty based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization

with applications to any engineering areas, in particular:

- Aeronautics, Aerospace, and Space
- Agriculture and Precision Farming
- Automotive
- Bio-Engineering
- Civil and Structural Engineering
- Electronics
- Energy, including Renewable Energy
- Offshores, Coastal and Marine Engineering and Operations
- Transport and Logistics
- Turbomachinery

*Registration*
Before May 1st, 2017: 200$ (students: 150$)
After May 1st, 2017: 250$ (students: 180$)

*Abstract Submission*
Abstracts should be no longer than 100 words and should not contain mathematical notation.

Updated info on submission and registration will be available at the Workshop page https://www.gerad.ca/colloques/europt2017/

COCANA (Centre for Optimization Convex Analysis and Nonsmooth Analysis, https://ocana.ok.ubc.ca/) invites applications for PhD/MSc positions starting September 2017.

The positions will be based at the UBC Okanagan campus (http://ok.ubc.ca/). The PhD positions are fully funded for 4 years while the MSc positions are fully funded for 2 years (The MSc in Computer Science program mandate a minimum funding of $17,500/year.)

The first project is on road design optimization. The research is industry sponsored and include the opportunity to develop patents. Good programming skills (C/C++ preferred) are required, and optimization or operations research skills are desired.

The second project is on computational convex analysis and involves the creation of new algorithms to compute mathematical objects regularly used in convex analysis. The background required is in algorithms with good programming skills in high level languages (MATLAB, Scilab, or Octave), and a desire to learn convex analysis.

Historically students with a computer science background have been very successful in our program (and found positions at Google, Amazon, or Microsoft), as well as students with a mathematical background and strong programming skills.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Yves Lucet, Professor, Computer Science, Associate Head Computer Science/Data Science at yves.lucet@ubc.ca. The deadline for funded applications is January 31, 2017.
