PhD positions in Mathematics at LSE (the London School of Economics and
Political Science)

The Department of Mathematics at LSE has openings for PhD students,
including in the areas of Discrete Mathematics, Operations Research and
Analytics, and Game Theory. We are seeking exceptionally talented and
motivated students with a strong mathematical background and interest in
combinatorics, random structures, mathematical foundations of operations
research, discrete optimisation, algorithms, mathematical and
algorithmic game theory, and related areas.

Applicants will automatically be considered for funding covering fees
and paying GBP 18,000/year (currently approximately EUR 21,000 or USD
22,000) for up to 4 years. The award of these scholarships is
competitive, based on academic performance (typically in an MSc or
equivalent) and suitability of the proposed research. Application
deadlines for funding are 9 January and 26 April 2017; we strongly
encourage submission by the earlier deadline.

Special Collection on Social and Collaborative Networks and their Applications

This Special Collection is devoted to publishing the latest significant research results on Social and Collaborative Networks design, analysis and management. During the last two decades, there has been a remarkable increase in research attention to networks which fostered the domains of applications and gathered research in the exchanging of knowledge on methods and models. Moreover, the increased availability of large databases and big data analysis opportunities have enabled the description of emergent phenomena as well as communities and collaborative patterns between networks' members.

Networks can be considered a valuable representation of many real systems and play an important role in their understanding. They have a flexible definition - set of nodes and links, representing agents and the interactions among them, respectively - which favors the association between theories in different research fields, ranging from social and managerial to technological and infrastructural aspects as well as to communication systems.

Networks ubiquity has led to a set of common and relevant research problems on how structures facilitate or limit their dynamical behaviors. Thus, the analysis of networks' architecture is extremely useful in order to acquire insight regarding the systems they represent.

This Special Collection encourages research that uses empirical and case study approaches to present theories, techniques and practical experiences in networks that may be used in applications of network methodologies. Articles that have a direct connection to real world problems and lead to more extensive use of network science concepts are preferentially welcome.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Social Network Analysis
• Complex networks, quantitative models and their applications
• Community structure and collaboration in networks
• Big data on social and collaborative networks
• Resilience and recovery in networks
• Assortativity and homophily in social network analysis
• Management and networks
• Multilayer networks

Manuscripts submitted to this Special Collection will be peer-reviewed before publication.

AIMS & SCOPE
================
Emerging technologies in genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics and
other life science areas are generating an increasing amount of
complex data and information. Traditionally, bioinformatics has been
focused on the design of methods and technologies facilitating the
acquisition, storage, organization, archiving, analysis and
visualization of biological and medical data. However, recent changes
related to the emerging technologies have made the role of computer
science (both theoretical and applied aspects) much more critical in
all the bioinformatics research directions.

Computational biology, on the other hand, has emphasized mathematical
and computational techniques facilitating the modelling and simulation
of biomedical processes and systems.

In recent years the distinction between these two fields has become
increasingly blurred. In order to tackle the growing complexity
associated with emerging and future life science challenges,
bioinformatics and computational biology researchers and developers
need to explore, develop and apply novel computational concepts,
methods, tools and systems.

Many of these new approaches are likely to involve advanced and
large-scale computing techniques, computational approaches,
technologies and infrastructures such as:

High-performance architectures and systems (e.g. multicore, GPU);
Distributed computing (e.g. grid, cloud, peer-to-peer, Web services,
e-infrastructures);
Computational simulation (mechanistic, stochastic, multi-model);
Algorithms (theoretical and experimental aspects);
Applied bioinformatics (analysis pipelines, tools, applications);
Artificial and computational intelligence (machine learning, agents,
evolutionary techniques, bio-inspired methods).
Together, these topics cover the key bioinformatics and computational
biology techniques and technologies encountered in modern life science
environments:

Advanced computing architectures/infrastructures
Data/information management and integrationData/information analysis
and knowledge discovery
Integration of quantitative/symbolic knowledge into executable
biomedical "theories" or models.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together computer and life
scientists to discuss emerging and future directions in these areas.

DCOSS 2017 is the 13th International Conference on Distributed Computing in
Sensor Systems to be hosted in Ottawa, Canada in June 5-7, 2017. Due to
their potential of impacting an entire host of application areas,
distributed sensor systems have become a highly visible research area. The
focus of DCOSS series of conferences is on distributed computing issues in
large scale networked sensor systems, including, but not limited to,
algorithms and applications, systems design techniques and tools, and
in-network signal and information processing. DCOSS puts together a highly
selective program where it primes for quality and innovation on works.

Potential authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts
that demonstrate current research on computational aspects of distributed
sensor systems. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

Social networks and applications
Sensors for smart grid systems, green networks and sustainability
Computation and programming models
Energy models, minimization, awareness
Distributed collaborative information processing

High-quality original papers are solicited. Papers must be unpublished and

reviewed by Technical Program Committee members and other experts active in
the field to ensure high quality and relevance to the conference.
