BRAIN-TRansversal Assessment of Intermodal New Strategies (BRAIN-TRAINS)
For this Belgian Research Action through Interdisciplinary Networks, HEC-ULg
offers a PhD fellowship starting in March 2014.
BRAIN-TRAINS is a four-year project (2014-2018) with the University of
Antwerp.
HEC? Management School - University of Liege (HEC?-ULg) is the school of
management of the University of Liege. HEC-ULg is one of the leading Belgian
university business schools for graduate and postgraduate programs with more
than 115 full-time faculty members and researchers and more than 2380
students. The school's mission is to train creative managers who will be
responsible for building the future of businesses and organizations in a
cross-cultural world. HEC-ULg is a dynamic institution that heavily promotes
an active pedagogy leading students to actively contribute to their
education. The international vision of HEC-ULg translates into multiple
research activities in management and economics, numerous partnerships with
worldwide companies and universities, and growing internationalization of
its programs and faculty.
HEC-ULg is located in Li?ge, Belgium?s third largest city, and the largest
agglomeration of the French-speaking Walloon region. At the heart of Europe,
Li?ge is the third inland port of Europe and the seventh freight airport in
Europe.? Recognized for its quality of life and its rich historical
patrimonium, Li?ge is ideally situated within the Meuse-Rhin Euregio, 40
kilometers from Maastricht (the Netherlands) and 60 kilometers from Aachen
(Germany). It is less than 1.5 hours away from K?ln, 2.5 hours from Paris
and 4 hours from London by high-speed train (TGV) starting from the new
magnificent train station designed by the renowned architect Santiago
Calatrava.
HEC-ULg work environment :
http://www.hec.ulg.ac.be/en/hec-ulg-business-school-assets
Mission?:
The objective of BRAIN-TRAINS is to determine how rail freight intermodality
can be made successful and how it can contribute to solve the related
market, society and policy-making challenges. Starting point of the project
is the relative weak usage of this mode of transport. The research proposal
aims at building new understanding based on existing knowledge, by
integrating and approaching the problem from an interdisciplinary
perspective. It tackles various issues which are still scientifically
unresolved, for both policy-makers and the transport sector.
HEC-ULg?s main work is on the design and the management of intermodal
transport services networks. To do that, road, rail and transhipment costs
can be based on models for calculating operational and external costs of
intermodal and road freight transportation networks. These costs include
different components such as personnel, energy, stock depreciation and
maintenance, and rail infrastructure charges, but also delays through e.g.
customs procedures. External costs include local and global air pollution,
congestion, noise pollution, and traffic accidents. In order to reflect the
real impact of transportation on the environment, those costs will be
incorporated into our models, in interaction with the outputs of the other
partners of the project. Secondly, our research will look into the economic
improvements that an intermodal services network may bring by a better use
of its modal networks and an optimal distribution of the flows on these
networks. More precisely, given a group of demands characterized by their
removal points, their delivery points, the physical properties of the goods
and the times intervals for removal and delivery, transport chains have to
be defined between the removal and delivery points.
The approach comes under the operations research domain and the mathematical
optimization. Design and management of intermodal transport services
networks problems are complex inherently, in regards to the multiplicity of
the objectives, of the constraints and of the parameters. In addition,
taking into account external costs due to emissions might imply the
development of non-linear optimization models.
Candidate profile:

2ND CALL FOR PAPERS
Designing complex industrial systems is a fundamental strategic challenges.
This spawned the relatively new academic field of "system architecture &
engineering", producing a body of research that allows engineers to manage
the increasing complexity of the technical systems they design.

2ND CALL FOR PAPERS
Designing complex industrial systems is a fundamental strategic challenges.
This spawned the relatively new academic field of "system architecture &
engineering", producing a body of research that allows engineers to manage
the increasing complexity of the technical systems they design.
This field is at the interface between industry and academia, and requires
its practitioners to understand the industrial concrete contexts as well
as to master a strong theoretical background.
Thus, the ambition of the 5th CSD&M conference is to be the meeting of

The SWANSITY workshop aims to solicit contributions on novel algorithms, methodological studies and experimentations on how to make a city-wide network infrastructure able to self-adapt to the dynamic requirements posed by the users and by the applications, to manage the complexity of heterogeneous devices and access technologies, and to guarantee robust, ubiquitous, and secure connectivity over the urban environments. At the same time, beside studying the issues of the city-wide infrastructure deployment, the workshop aims to investigate the potential provided by the end-users devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) when augmented with self-organization capabilities, in order to turn them into active components of the smart-city network, instead of mere connection end- points. Such a potential includes the possibility to extend the network access in a pervasive way, to provide ubiquitous computing services, and to favor the emergence of ?collectivity intelligence behaviors? thr!
ough collaboration and direct communication among devices.
In line with such objectives, original contributions are solicited in topics of interest including, but not limited to, the following:
* Models of network components? interactions on a smart-city
* Techniques and tools for modeling self-organizing wireless networks on large-scale urban environments
* Self-organizing wireless networks for pervasive urban access
* Self-organizing and self-repairing wireless networks for disaster recovery

Call for submissions:
Over the last decade, parameterized complexity analysis for NP-hard
problems
has developed into one of the most prospering areas in algorithms and
complexity
research. So far, the main research focus is on purely theoretical
analysis (mostly
concerning graph-theoretic problems).
However, practical success often relies on one or more of the following
aspects:
* The problem under study occurs in real-world applications and
ideally
comes along with real-world data for testing.
* The considered parameterization yields small parameter values in
real-world
instances.
* The running time analysis accounts for the combinatorial
explosion behind
exponential parameter functions, as well as for polynomial
running time factors in
the overall input size.
We invite submissions that address one or more of the aforementioned
points in
analyzing the parameterized complexity of NP-hard problems, which arises
from
application areas including (but not limited to) network analysis
(biological, social,
and technical), computational geometry, SAT solving, bioinformatics, string
problems, operations research and combinatorial optimization, computational
social choice, data clustering, and mining.
We particularly welcome submissions that introduce new but practically
relevant
problem formulations and/or parameterizations, present linear-time fixed-
parameter tractability and/or kernelization results, or that take into
account
aspects of algorithm engineering. In particular, such aspects could
include the
measurement or estimation of parameter values in real-world data.
Finally, feature
papers or surveys addressing some of the above aspects are also of
interest.
Keywords
* NP-hard problems
* exact algorithms
* fixed-parameter tractability
* kernelization and data reduction
* efficient algorithms
* algorithm engineering
The deadline for submission is 31 May 2014, but you may send your
manuscript
at any time before then. All submissions are peer-reviewed and accepted
papers
will be published immediately. If you plan to contribute, please send a
short
abstract to the Editorial Office (algorithms@mdpi.com).
Algorithms is an open access journal, which has no income from selling
subscriptions. To defray the editorial and production costs, the journal
levies an
Article Processing Charge (APC) for accepted papers. Please refer to
http://www.mdpi.com/journal/algorithms/apc/ for more information. The
charge
currently is of 300 CHF (Swiss Francs) per accepted paper.

Finally, feature
papers or surveys addressing some of the above aspects are also of
interest.
Keywords
* NP-hard problems
* exact algorithms
* fixed-parameter tractability
* kernelization and data reduction
* efficient algorithms
* algorithm engineering

To be held in conjunction with The 2014 IEEE 79th Vehicular Technology
Conference (VTC2014-Spring), 18-21 May 2014, Seoul, Korea
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
-----------------------
The rapid growth of the number of cars on the roads has created a
plethora of
challenges for road traffic management authorities such as, traffic
congestion, increasing number of accidents, air pollution, etc. Over the
last
decade, researchers from both industry and academia have focused their
efforts
on exploiting advances in sensing and communication technologies to make
the
existing road Traffic Management Systems (TMSs) more efficient.
Their main goal is to improve the traveler?s safety, shorten the travel
time
and reduce the environmental impact.
Road traffic management for smart cities involves monitoring the actual
traffic situation in real-time (including volumes, speeds, incidents, etc.)
and then controlling or influencing the flow using that information in
order
to reduce traffic congestion, deal efficiently with incidents and provide
accurate and reliable traffic information and prediction to both drivers
and
authorities. Moreover, it is foreseen that future smart cities will provide
faster and secure emergency service delivery by granting proper traffic
privileges to emergency vehicles.
This workshop seeks to bring together researchers, scientists and engineers
from various research communities, as well as practitioners and
administrators
who face the challenges of traffic management in smart cities. They are all
welcome to present and discuss their latest research findings, ideas,
simulation tools and applications at the 2014 VTM workshop.

Slowly but steadily the Internet of Things (IoT) is penetrating and transforming our lives. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and!
surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology.
The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution.
The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate ?Big brother scenario?. Therefore, a particular i!
nterest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms.
The secondary focus of this workshop is on IoT vision and perspective towards Web 3.0.
IoTIP features two tracks:
- Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation;
- Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT.
Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
? IoT paradigms, architectures, applications and technologies
? IoT systems and components
? IoT for semantic web and personalization
? Tools for developing IoT applications
? Blogging, Podcasting, Tagging and Social networking through the IoT
? Cloud vs distributed computing for the IoT
? Security and privacy control mechanisms
? Performance assessment and management (QoS, scalability, reliability, etc)
? PHY layer, Spectrum management for IoT radio communications
? MAC protocols (e.g., scheduling, power control etc.) for IoT
? Mobility management
? Naming, address management and End-to-End Addressability
? Object, device and service management
? RFID, sensors, actuator technologies
? Middleware
? Sustainable design and technologies (e.g. energy-efficiency)
? Test-beds and field trials
? Standardization and regulatory issues
Submission guidelines
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research on IoTIP research topics. Standard IEEE conference templates for LaTeX/Word formats can be found at: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html.
Papers should be submitted through EDAS at the following address: http://edas.info/N17145.
All submissions should be written in English using 10 point font and be six (8) printed pages long maximum using 10 point font and including figures and tables. The papers should be submitted to one of the two tracks:
? Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation;
? Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT.
Authors must suggest their preferred track for their paper at the time of submission. The workshop chairs, however, reserve the right to switch papers between tracks if they deem them a better fit for another track.
Please note that the proceedings of this workshop will appear in IEEEXplore and will be included in DCOSS conference proceedings.
Extended versions of selected papers will be considered for publication in IEEE IoT Journal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To be held in conjunction with The 2014 IEEE 79th Vehicular Technology

- Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation;
- Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT.
Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
? IoT paradigms, architectures, applications and technologies
? IoT systems and components
? IoT for semantic web and personalization
? Tools for developing IoT applications
? Blogging, Podcasting, Tagging and Social networking through the IoT
? Cloud vs distributed computing for the IoT
? Security and privacy control mechanisms
? Performance assessment and management (QoS, scalability, reliability, etc)
? PHY layer, Spectrum management for IoT radio communications
? MAC protocols (e.g., scheduling, power control etc.) for IoT
? Mobility management
? Naming, address management and End-to-End Addressability
? Object, device and service management
? RFID, sensors, actuator technologies
? Middleware
? Sustainable design and technologies (e.g. energy-efficiency)
? Test-beds and field trials
? Standardization and regulatory issues

All submissions should be written in English using 10 point font and be six (8) printed pages long maximum using 10 point font and including figures and tables. The papers should be submitted to one of the two tracks:
? Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation;
? Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT.
Authors must suggest their preferred track for their paper at the time of submission. The workshop chairs, however, reserve the right to switch papers between tracks if they deem them a better fit for another track.
