The Second Cross-domain Heuristic Search Challenge - CHeSC 2014

The CHeSC series seeks to bring together practitioners from operational research, computer science and artificial intelligence who are interested in developing more general and reusable methods for automated search control; doing so using hyper-heuristics that can be applied without modification to solve a wide range of instances from different problem domains. In CHeSC 2011, the hyper-heuristic was used to solve each instance separately and independently in a fixed time.
CHeSC 2014 uses a "batch mode" in which the hyper-heuristic is given all the instances as a batch, together with a total time to solve them. As before, the hyper-heuristic then needs to decide how to use the supplied low-level heuristics (move/neighbourhood operators) for the problem domain in order to provide a solution for each instance in the batch. However, new challenges arise because the hyper-heuristic has the opportunity to:
* Decide how to allocate computational time between the instances
* Learn from some instances to be able to work better on others.
To support these, some limited information about features of each instance (size and ?kind?) is also made available to the hyper-heuristic.
The challenge is open now and with the deadline given below.
Competition Starts: 28 November 2013
Submission Deadline: 28 March 2014
Hence, you have four months to produce a "batch mode hyper-heuristic" that is able to solve a set of instances associated with multiple domains.
To encourage transition towards exploitation of multi-core machines, the competition has two tracks:
1) "Single-solver mode" - only one solver is allowed to run at a time.
2) "Multiple-solver mode" - multiple solvers are allowed to exploit the multiple cores of machine that will be used for evaluation.
In total, ?1,200 will be given as prizes to the implementers of top ranking algorithms in the competition.

30th British Colloquium for Theoretical Computer Science (BCTCS)
9th to 11th April 2014

SCOPE
The purpose of the BCTCS is to provide a forum in which researchers in
theoretical computer science can meet, present research findings, and discuss
developments in the field. It also aims to provide an environment in which PhD
students can gain experience in presenting their work, and benefit from contact
with established researchers. The conference will consist of invited
presentations by distinguished researchers and a number of contributed talks.
LOCATION AND SCHEDULE
BCTCS 2014 will be held at Loughborough University, which enjoys a central
location in the UK and is well connected to most of the UK by rail, road or by
plane. Various types of reasonably priced accommodation will be available on
campus with easy access to the conference venue as well as the town center and
restaurants.
The event will start on the Wednesday afternoon and will end after a conference
lunch on the Friday.

We would like to invite you to the workshop "Eco Friendly Mobility:
Concepts and Algorithms" that will take place on the 22nd and 23rd
of January 2014, in Zurich, Switzerland. The workshop is organized
in the scope of the EU eCOMPASS project (http://www.ecompass-project.eu/).
The aim of the workshop is to provide a meeting place and information
exchange platform among professionals dealing with concepts and
algorithms for eco-friendly mobility, including members of the
eCOMPASS project.
The workshop will consist of invited keynote lectures by high profile
researchers in the area, as well as talks by eCOMPASS project members
detailing their current research in the areas of traffic prediction;
robust, alternative, and time-dependent route planning; road and
multi-modal networks; route planning for vehicle fleets; and tourist
trip planning.
We plan to have one (or more) "Related Activities" session(s)
consisting of short (5-10 minutes) presentations related to
the scope of the workshop and which include (but are not
limited to) current R&D work, project presentations, short
demos/videos, etc. If you wish to make such a presentation,
please fill in the corresponding fields (title and a short
abstract) in the Registration Form. Please note that such
requests will be treated on a first-come-first-served basis.

An der Fakult?t f?r Mathematik der Technischen Universit?t Chemnitz ist
ab dem 01.03.2014 eine Stelle als Wissenschaftlicher
Mitarbeiter/Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin (100%, Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L)
vorerst befristet bis zum 28.02.2015 (mit der Option auf Entfristung) zu
besetzen. Die Einstellung erfolgt gem?? den Regelungen des S?chsischen

Die Aufgaben umfassen:
* Lehr- und Betreuungst?tigkeiten f?r Studierende in allen
mathematischen Studieng?ngen sowie im Service f?r andere Fakult?ten,
vornehmlich der Fakult?t f?r Wirtschaftswissenschaften
* Unterst?tzung der verantwortlichen Vorlesenden bei der
Lehrorganisation und der Koordinierung von Betreuungsaufgaben sowie bei
der Anleitung von ?bungsleitern und Tutoren
* Organisation der Fachinformation und Pflege des Bibliotheksbestandes
der Fakult?t f?r Mathematik
Erfahrung in und Freude an Gestaltung, Organisation und Durchf?hrung
akademischer Lehre werden vorausgesetzt. Die Lehrbefugnis in einem
mathematischen Fachgebiet ist von Vorteil, ebenso ein
Forschungsschwerpunkt in einem Bereich nahe der Wirtschaftsmathematik
und Interesse an Themen der Statistik und Stochastik. Dar?ber hinaus
wird nachhaltiges Interesse an eigenst?ndiger Forschung, die
Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit den Forschungsgruppen der Fakult?t f?r
Mathematik sowie zur Mitwirkung an organisatorischen Belangen der
Fakult?t erwartet.
Einstellungsvoraussetzung ist ein abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches
Hochschulstudium auf dem Gebiet der Mathematik, welches zur Zulassung

We are excited to announce the Stochastic Activity Month (SAM) on
?Probability and Combinatorics".
The event takes place at Eurandom, on the campus of Eindhoven
University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands during the month
of January 2014.
Activities include:
- A workshop on "Probability and Graphs", 6-10 January. To be opened
by Joel Spencer, one of the central researchers in the area. The focus
is on random graphs, probabilistic combinatorics and graph limits.
- A mini-course week. "Graph limits", 13 January, Christian Borgs and
Yufei Zhao. "Analysis of Boolean functions", 14-16 January, Guy
Kindler. "Probabilistic aspects of Minimal Spanning Trees", 15-16
January, Louigi Addario-Berry, Nicolas Broutin, Christina Goldschmidt,
Gr?gory Miermont.
- A short workshop on "Networks with community structure", 22-23
January. The meeting concerns models, processes and algorithms
relating to networks and graphs with community structure.

AIM:
SSTiC 2014 is the second edition in a series started in 2013. For the
previous event, see http://grammars.grlmc.com/SSTiC2013/
SSTiC 2014 will be a research training event mainly addressed to PhD
students and PhD holders in the first steps of their academic career. It
intends to update them about the most recent developments in the diverse
branches of computer science and its neighbouring areas. To that purpose,
renowned scholars will lecture and will be available for interaction with
the audience.
SSTiC 2014 will cover the whole spectrum of computer science through 5
keynote lectures and 30 six-hour courses dealing with the hottest topics in
the field. The organizers share the idea that outstanding speakers will
really attract high-quality students.
ADDRESSED TO:
Graduate students from around the world. There are no formal pre-requisites
in terms of the academic degree the attendee must hold. However, since there
will be several levels in the courses, reference may be made to specific
knowledge background in the description of some of them.
SSTiC 2014 is also appropriate for more senior people who want to keep
themselves updated on developments in their own field or in other branches
of computer science. They will surely find it fruitful to listen and discuss
with scholars who are main references in computing nowadays.
REGIME:
In addition to keynotes, 3 parallel sessions will be held during the whole
event. Participants will be able to freely choose the courses they will be
willing to attend as well as to move from one to another.

The selection of up to 8 courses requested in the registration template is
only tentative and non-binding. For the sake of organization, it will be
helpful to have an approximation of the respective demand for each course.
Since the capacity of the venue is limited, registration requests will be
processed on a first come first served basis. The registration period will
be closed when the capacity of the venue will be complete. It is very
convenient to register prior to the event.
FEES:
As far as possible, participants are expected to attend for the whole (or
most of the) week (full-time). Fees are a flat rate allowing one to attend
all courses. They vary depending on the registration deadline.
If seats will still be available, shortly prior to the event attending only
a few days (part-time) may be permitted, with the appropriate adjustment of
the fees.
ACCOMMODATION:
Information about accommodation will be available on the website of the
School in due time.
CERTIFICATE:
Participants will be delivered a certificate of attendance.

== About the Book ==
Research into artificial intelligence (AI) and computational
intelligence (CI) started in the 1950s and has been growing ever since.
The main focus of the research is to provide computers with the capacity
to perform tasks that are believed to require human intelligence. The
field is in constant need of good benchmark problems. Games provide a
plethora of tough and interesting challenges for AI and CI, including
developing artificial players, computationally creative systems that
construct game content, agents that adapt to players, and systems that
analyse and learn about players from their in-game behaviour.
In May 2012, around 40 world-leading experts convened in Schloss
Dagstuhl, Germany, to discuss future research directions and important
research challenges for AI and CI in games. This book is the follow-up
volume to that seminar, which collects the distilled results of the
discussions that went on during those May days.
This book consists of 8 chapters. Each chapter is the outcome of a
particular discussion group. In editing this volume, we have chosen to
arrange the chapters so that they start with the more generic problems
and methods and proceed to more specific applications. However, the web
of interdependence between work on these topics is dense, with games for
mobile platforms relying on pathfinding, general game playing on
procedural content generation, procedural content generation on player
modelling, etc.

The Theory Group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology
(http://www.csc.kth.se/tcs/) invites applications for visiting PhD student
positions during 2014. These positions are intended for PhD students with
a strong research record who would like to spend part of their PhD program
in another research environment. The students will be hosted by Per
Austrin (http://www.csc.kth.se/~austrin/), Johan Hastad
(http://www.csc.kth.se/~johanh/), and/or Jakob Nordstrom
(http://www.csc.kth.se/~jakobn/), depending on profile and research
interests.
The default set-up would assume that the PhD students receive some kind of
basic salary/support from their home institutions, and that the Theory
Group at KTH covers any extra costs involved with the visit to Stockholm
(travel expenses, accommodation, living expenses, et cetera). Other
arrangements can also be considered. The duration of stay could be from a
couple of months up to a full term.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but to be considered for the
early spring term it would help to contact us in December. Please send us
an e-mail at visiting-phd@csc.kth.se with a CV and a brief research
statement as attachments, and also include the names of two reference
persons whom we can contact.

AIM:
SSTiC 2014 is the second edition in a series started in 2013. For the
previous event, see http://grammars.grlmc.com/SSTiC2013/
SSTiC 2014 will be a research training event mainly addressed to PhD
students and PhD holders in the first steps of their academic career. It
intends to update them about the most recent developments in the diverse
branches of computer science and its neighbouring areas. To that purpose,
renowned scholars will lecture and will be available for interaction with
the audience.
SSTiC 2014 will cover the whole spectrum of computer science through 5
keynote lectures and 30 six-hour courses dealing with the hottest topics in
the field. The organizers share the idea that outstanding speakers will
really attract high-quality students.
ADDRESSED TO:
Graduate students from around the world. There are no formal pre-requisites
in terms of the academic degree the attendee must hold. However, since there
will be several levels in the courses, reference may be made to specific
knowledge background in the description of some of them.
SSTiC 2014 is also appropriate for more senior people who want to keep
themselves updated on developments in their own field or in other branches
of computer science. They will surely find it fruitful to listen and discuss
with scholars who are main references in computing nowadays.

In addition to keynotes, 3 parallel sessions will be held during the whole
event. Participants will be able to freely choose the courses they will be
willing to attend as well as to move from one to another.

The selection of up to 8 courses requested in the registration template is
only tentative and non-binding. For the sake of organization, it will be
helpful to have an approximation of the respective demand for each course.
Since the capacity of the venue is limited, registration requests will be
processed on a first come first served basis. The registration period will
be closed when the capacity of the venue will be complete. It is very
convenient to register prior to the event.
FEES:
As far as possible, participants are expected to attend for the whole (or
most of the) week (full-time). Fees are a flat rate allowing one to attend
all courses. They vary depending on the registration deadline.
If seats will still be available, shortly prior to the event attending only
a few days (part-time) may be permitted, with the appropriate adjustment of
the fees.
ACCOMMODATION:
Information about accommodation will be available on the website of the
School in due time.
CERTIFICATE:
Participants will be delivered a certificate of attendance.

== About the Book ==
Research into artificial intelligence (AI) and computational
intelligence (CI) started in the 1950s and has been growing ever since.
The main focus of the research is to provide computers with the capacity
to perform tasks that are believed to require human intelligence. The
field is in constant need of good benchmark problems. Games provide a
plethora of tough and interesting challenges for AI and CI, including
developing artificial players, computationally creative systems that
construct game content, agents that adapt to players, and systems that
analyse and learn about players from their in-game behaviour.
In May 2012, around 40 world-leading experts convened in Schloss
Dagstuhl, Germany, to discuss future research directions and important
research challenges for AI and CI in games. This book is the follow-up
volume to that seminar, which collects the distilled results of the
discussions that went on during those May days.
This book consists of 8 chapters. Each chapter is the outcome of a
particular discussion group. In editing this volume, we have chosen to
arrange the chapters so that they start with the more generic problems
and methods and proceed to more specific applications. However, the web
of interdependence between work on these topics is dense, with games for
mobile platforms relying on pathfinding, general game playing on
procedural content generation, procedural content generation on player
modelling, etc.

The Theory Group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology

positions during 2014. These positions are intended for PhD students with
a strong research record who would like to spend part of their PhD program
in another research environment. The students will be hosted by Per
Austrin (http://www.csc.kth.se/~austrin/), Johan Hastad
(http://www.csc.kth.se/~johanh/), and/or Jakob Nordstrom
(http://www.csc.kth.se/~jakobn/), depending on profile and research
interests.
The default set-up would assume that the PhD students receive some kind of
basic salary/support from their home institutions, and that the Theory
Group at KTH covers any extra costs involved with the visit to Stockholm
(travel expenses, accommodation, living expenses, et cetera). Other
arrangements can also be considered. The duration of stay could be from a
couple of months up to a full term.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but to be considered for the
early spring term it would help to contact us in December. Please send us

statement as attachments, and also include the names of two reference
persons whom we can contact.

Motivation
==========
Bio-inspired search heuristics often turn out to be highly successful
for optimization in practice. The theory of these randomized search
heuristics explains the success or the failure of these methods in
practical applications. Theoretical analyses lead to the understanding
of which problems are optimized (or approximated) efficiently by a
given algorithm and which are not.
The benefits of theoretical understanding for practitioners are
threefold.
1. Aiding the algorithm design,
2. guiding the choice of the best algorithm for the problem at
hand,
3. determining the optimal parameter settings.
The theory of evolutionary computation has grown rapidly in recent
years. The primary aim of this special session is to bring together
people working on theoretical aspects of bio-inspired computation. The
latest breakthroughs in the theory of bio-inspired computation will be
reported and new directions will be set.

Potential authors are invited to submit papers describing original
contributions to foundations of evolutionary computation. Although we
are most interested in theoretical foundations, computational studies
of a foundational nature are also welcome.
